Marti Friedlander: Photographs is the major retrospective volume produced to accompany the Auckland Art Gallery's landmark exhibition surveying forty years of Friedlander's work, from 1957 to 1986. The book gathers 150 photographs, ranging from her celebrated moko portraits and images of Māori communities to portraits of artists and writers, Pacific subjects, and scenes of everyday New Zealand life. The selection emphasises Friedlander's eye for social texture, cultural identity, and the quiet drama of ordinary people. Ron Brownson's curatorial text situates the images within Friedlander's career and within New Zealand's photographic history, highlighting her role as one of the country's most significant documentary photographers. The volume is a 182‑page large-format paperback, published by Godwit in 2001, and remains the most substantial single‑volume survey of her work. …
