Romilly's firsthand account of his service with the International Brigades during the defence of Madrid in 1936, culminating in the disastrous fighting at Boadilla del Monte. Aged eighteen, the rebellious nephew of Clementine Churchill, Romilly left England in October 1936, travelled by bicycle across France and made his way to Spain, where he joined the English speaking group of the German Thälmann Battalion (the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936). In December 1936 the unit was transferred to Boadilla, where it came under intense fire during a Nationalist offensive. Of approximately forty members of the English speaking group, only seventeen successfully retreated and seven British volunteers were killed. Romilly survived but contracted dysentery and was invalided back to England in January 1937. Written soon afterwards, Boadilla is both a remarkably immediate account of combat and a memorial to the young men who did not return. Romilly's politics are inseparable from his experience: a runaway from Wellington College and coauthor, with his brother Giles, of Out of Bounds, he had become an outspoken opponent of fascism, militarism and the conservative establishment. His decision to fight for the Spanish Republic placed him in direct opposition to the politics of much of his own social background. The book is consequently as much a document of youthful political adventure. After returning to England, Romilly met Jessica Mitford. The two soon eloped and travelled to France; Romilly wrote Boadilla during their honeymoon. The couple subsequently hoped to return to Spain, but were unable to secure the necessary visa. Initial sales were poor, and the first edition is now remarkably elusive in commerce, particularly in the original dust jacket. Romilly's account has since acquired considerable historical importance as a primary source for the early involvement of British volunteers in the Spanish Civil War and has been used by historians including Paul Preston, Hugh Thomas and Antony Beevor. Romilly later served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He died on 30 November 1941 when his aircraft failed to return from a bombing raid over Germany, aged only twenty-three. An account of a firebrand adolescence, written whilst both authors were still in their teens, detailing their battle with the public school system - as represented in their case by Wellington College, 'where they became allies in a rebellion against the militaristic and conservative values' (ODNB). Experiencing an awakening to left-wing politics quite at odds with the upbringing and education, they set about a programme of activism that included inserting pacifist leaflets inside the hymn-books at the school's Armistice Day service, and launching a magazine with the same title as the present account - the furore provoked by which (the Daily Mail alerted its readers to the 'Red Menace in Public Schools') led to Esmond absconding, before a brief return to the education system at the co-educational Bedales, following which they launched their literary careers with this 'precocious and unexpectedly even-tempered' work (ODNB). Both brothers continued their communist activity by joining the International Brigades to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War, with Esmond there marrying Jessica Mitford - a cause for further controversy. During the Second World War, Giles, working as a war correspondent in Scandinavia, was imprisoned at Colditz; Esmond, meanwhile, had also worked as a journalist, in the US, but returned to England and disappeared whilst on service as a navigator on a flight destined for a raid on Hamburg. …
