Contemporary half blue calf on marbled paper-laid boards, spines gilt ruled in six compartments with gilt lettered labels, red sprinkled edges (lightly rubbed at head and tail of spines and corners and boards a little scuffed - otherwise a VG set). Pp. xiv + [2] + 375 + [1] blank [&] viii + [2] + 390, with half titles, illlus with 1 coloured and 4 tinted plates (some with tissue-guards) and 6 woodcuts in text (light spotting on endpapers and toning on plates; no inscriptions).

Cloth. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A lovely example of this work of travel writing by Mrs. Romer in which she discusses a religious pilgrimage through Africa. Very scarce. First edition (Copac). Complete in 2 volumes, uniformly bound in the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Volume I is illustrated with 3 black and white plates and 3 woodcuts, and volume II with 1 colour plate, 1 black and white plate, and 3 woodcuts. Collated complete. With the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. It reads 'Mac-donnell esqr. of new-hall. W: e: armstrong'. Isabella Romer was a prolific writer of the 19th century, best remembered for her works of travel writing. This particular work charts her pilgrimage from Egypt to Nubia to Palestine, and is ranked as one of her most accomplished works. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Crack to the front and rear joints of volume I, resulting in a small amount of fraying to the cloth, with the backstrip starting to lift. Additional small cracks to the tail of the front joint of volume II. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each, with light creases to the rear endpapers. The front hinge of volume I lightly strained, with a small crack to the tail. Ink inscription to the head of the front endpaper of volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional mark, heavier to the first and last pages. Good. book.

Original ribbed maroon cloth, spines lettered in gilt, ornamented in blind; pp. [3], viii, 416; [3], viii, [2], 428; two lithographic frontispieces with tissue guards (one tinted, one hand coloured); two lithographic plates and two text illustrations in volume I, and two hand-coloured lithographic plates and four text illustrations in volume II; slight foxing; cloth lightly marked, and spines faded to beige; binding expertly recased. First edition. Mrs Romer, born in London, was a novelist, travel writer, and biographer. These two volumes follow her travels throughout France, Spain, and other Mediterranean islands, providing her first-hand impressions of these destinations. As Romer travels south, she provides interesting accounts of the Arab presence in this region in the chapter titled 'The Arab Dominion in Spain,' detailing the history of Arab rule in this area. Her accounts of the topography and weather conditions, as well as the culture surrounding the built environment in these areas in the mid-19th century makes for a highly interesting read.
