Cagnoni used to photograph sculptures in the small town of Pietrasanta, Tuscany, which is famous for its sculpture studios. In 1958, he moved to London, UK, where he lived for 30 years. Here, he started working as a freelance photographer contributing to different European magazines. He worked with Simon Guttmann who run the London office of the Report photo agency. Cagnoni was the first western non-communist photographer to be allowed North of Vietnam with the British journalist James Cameron. He worked in Cambodia, Nigeria during the civil war, Israel, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Chechnya, Kosovo, with the Soviet Army in Afghanistan in 1980, in Poland (1981), and Argentinian airports during the Falklands War in 1982. He was the first photographer to set up a studio on the front line to photograph soldiers during the fighting in Chechnya in 1995. In 1968 he won the Overseas Press Club Award, for his Nigerian Civil War reportage published in Life, the German Art Directors' Club bronze medal for documenting with a large format camera the destruction from the war in the former Yugoslavia, and many Italian prizes.[citation needed] In the late 1980s, he returned to live in Pietrasanta in Italy, from where he travels worldwide for his work. Cagnoni held 43 solo exhibitions, 43 group shows and retrospectives worldwide. His exhibition at Palazzo dell'Arengario in Milan, bore the title "Chiaroscuro", which, beyond the literal meaning, hints to "humour and darkness": these photographs show the darkness of war and sometimes the humour of everyday life. Cagnoni felt that these opposites are the essence of his work. The Sunday Times former editor Harold Evans, in his book Pictures on a Page: Photo-Journalism, Graphics and Picture Editing, mentions Cagnoni as one of the most famous photographers in the world with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bill Brandt, Don McCullin and Eugene Smith. After military service in Malaya during the Communist insurgency, he studied history at Oxford where he was recruited into the Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6. He resigned from MI6 and returned to Africa as a freelance journalist before being hired by the London Observer. He went on to assignments for the Observer in Paris, Beirut, and New York. During his time in Africa and the Middle East, he covered the Nigerian-Biafran civil war, the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, and the Islamic revolution in Iran. Turning freelance in New York, he divided his time between journalism, book writing, lecturing, and writing and editing for a number of organizations in the United States. He later edited the South Africa Update series for the Ford Foundation, consisting of five books on the critical years in South Africa that led to the end of apartheid. John de St. Jorre's journalistic output is as wide-ranging as his books. He has written articles and reviews for The New York Times and its Sunday Magazine, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New Yorker, Town and Country, The Times, The Guardian, Punch, The Literary Review, MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, and Departures amongst others. The Brothers' War: Biafra and Nigeria was first published in 1972. In the UK it had the title The Nigerian Civil War. That is what it is about. In the early 1960s Nigeria looked set to be the major black African country. It seemed to be immune from the internecine struggles that bedeviled so many of the African states. The illusion of stability was shattered at the beginning of 1966. During the next four years the country suffered two bloody coups, a series of appalling massacres, and a protracted and savage civil war which claimed a million lives. This was a civil war on a par with the American and Spanish civil wars and like both those it was a desperate affair, fought to the bitter end by determined people who shared a common past and a common language. John de St. Jorre covered the conflict for the Observer. He was one of the few people to keep in touch with both sides. His account was objective and remains definitive.
