Die Holzschnitte zeigen: Arche Noah, den Turm von Babel, Stadtansichten (Ninive, Trier, der Tempel von Jerusalem [als Wiederholung des Turms von Babel], Rom, Stadt Jerusalem und Köln), Christus am Kreuz sowie Christus als Weltenherrscher. Holzschnitte wie Diagramme in zeitgenössischem Kolorit. Durchgehend mit blau eingemalten Initialen (beider Tabula blau-rot alternierend) und in Rot rubriziert. Vom Rubrikator handschr. Blattzählung in Rot. Holzdeckel d. frühen 16. Jahrhunderts mit breitem blindgeprägtem Schweinslederrücken (dieser in späterer Zeit auf dem Rückendeckel gekürzt; beide Deckel leicht berieben, das Leder nachgedunkelt und etwas fleckig), 2 intakte Schließen (ein Schließband erneuert). Frühe Ausgabe von Rolewincks berühmter synoptischer Weltchronik (EA: Köln 1474) mit einer Textergänzung: auf Bl. i8 r findet sich eine Beschreibung des Treffens von Herzog Karl dem Kühnen von Burgund mit Kaiser Friedrich im Jahr 1473 in Trier, bei dem es um die Zukunft Burgunds als selbstständiger politischer Einheit ging. Im Handel sehr selten. Es werden zwei Druckvarianten unterschieden, die sich im Satz der Vorrede unterscheiden: GW M38689 (= HC 6914, Schreiber 5116) enthält mehr Abbreviaturen als GW M38691 (= C 2436, Schreiber 5116a); dies führt auf der Verso-Seite dazu, dass der Text in der ersten Variante eine Zeile weniger beansprucht als in der zweiten. In beiden Varianten trägt das Blatt die Signatur a1 (vgl. auch CIBN R-175 und ISTC). Unser Exemplar entspricht der wohl ursprünglicheren Version GW M38689 (der Vergleich erfolgte anhand von Fotos eines Exemplars von GW 38691, die uns Frau Arnhold von der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek dankenswerterweise zur Verfügung gestellt hat). Die Hinweise im CIBN sind ungenau. Die Datierung der Ausgabe ergibt sich aus dem Kaufvermerk in einem Exemplar in Frankfurt (s. Ohly-Sack). Die Zuschreibung dieses unfirmierten Drucks an Ludwig von Renchen war eine Zeit lang so gut wie unumstritten; 1992 warf Schüling (Ludwig v.R. S. 62 f.) die Druckerfrage erneut auf und schied - auf Grund von Typenvergleichen - diese Rolevinck-Ausgabe aus dem Korpus der Renchen-Drucke wieder aus. Er neigt dazu, sie im Anschluss an Scholderer Heinrich Quentell zuzuweisen (vgl. Scholderer, 50 Essays, S. 52 ff.). Bei Drucklegung des "Fasciculus" hatte der Drucker offensichtlich das Zensurrecht der Universität Köln, das dieser 1479 von Papst Sixtus IV. zugesprochen worden war (s. Corsten, Studien zum Kölner Frühdruck, S. 138), zu beachten; und so trägt das Incipit" des Buchs den Freigabevermerk der Universität: admissus ab alma universitatis Coloniensi"(Bl. a2r). Dieser Vermerk stellt eine große Seltenheit dar: Voulliéme (Kölner Drucke S. LXXXVII) kennt ihn bei nur 25 Drucken, bei Erzeugnissen aus Renchens Presse käme er scheidet man den Rolevinck aus nicht vor; bei Quentell sind Voulliémes Angaben widersprüchlich, die Tabelle S. LXXXVI nennt 8 Drucke mit dem Vermerk plus 2 Rolevinck-Nachdrucke, folgt man Schüling, käme eine weitere Fasciculus-Ausgabe hinzu. Auf jeden Fall ist der Freigabevermerk - neben den Holzschnitten - ein starkes Indiz dafür, dass die Ausgabe aus einer Kölner Offizin stammt. Die Holzschnitte sind teils Kopien solcher aus Quentells Fasciculus-Ausgaben (Schramm Nr. 536-38, 541 [auf der rechten Seite verkürzt], 542; teils modifizierte Nachschnitte (Schramm 543) und teils Neuentwürfe (Schramm 535, 539, 540). - Weitere Deails der Beschreibung finden Sie auf unserer Internetseite.

[Cologne, Bartholomaeus de Unkel,  Scarce early edition of this unusual, and fascinating book of moral advice for farmers. It follows the model of the medieval ?mirror? genre of writing for kings, princes, and others, but, interestingly, is the only book of this type written for agricultural workers (Henn). Its prolific author, monk and chronicler Werner Rolewinck (1425-1502), was himself a son of farmers of Westphalia and a Carthusian monk of Cologne, where our book was printed.   Here Rolewinck explains to the farmer straightforward rules for a good life. Among other things, they must fear God; respect the agricultural profession; love the clergy; pay dues; observe church rites; give to the poor; keep peace with neighbours; govern their families well; watch against evil; keep away from drinkers, swearers and those who don?t fear God; confess sins; meditate on God?s laws; reflect on the brevity of life, and pray to God for direction towards eternal joys. Importantly, they have high status: ?the rustic dignity [?] is instituted by God [?] above other mechanical arts? (sig. b2 verso). They grow the materials for the Holy Communion - ?[God] set it that they make his blessed body and precious blood? (b3 recto) ? and in their fundamental and divinely-ordained role of feeding people, ?the farmer is the principal co-operator of God, the angels and nature? (ibid.)   Besides farmers, the book is advertised as useful for priests and secular officials. The German regions were to see major rural unrest (including, most famously the German Peasants? War in 1524-6), which makes this book, addressing rural workers? lives and praising their standing, especially notable.   This is the only edition printed by Bartholomaeus de Unkel; generally accepted as the third overall edition of this work (the first in 1472), incunable editions of this text are rare, and of the present edition particularly so; we have found only three complete copies recorded in US libraries, at Boston PL, Harvard and the Library of Congress; the Huntington copy is incomplete.   19 short manuscript early marginal glosses (faded), reader?s marks from same time. THE SECOND PRINTED VIEW OF ANYWHERE IN ENGLAND. 55 x 145 mm., set within a leaf of text measuring 270 x 195 mm., light browning upper left margin, two small wormholes, otherwise in good condition. This is the second printed view of England, in two woodblocks. The 'Fasciculus Temporum' by Werner Rolewinck (1425-1502) was first published in Cologne, 1474. Although Shirley cites the image in the "Nuremberg Chronicle" by Hartmann Schedel he does not list this item which is of an earlier date. It was the first history of the world ever printed, published some twenty years before the better known 'Nuremberg Chronicle' by Hartmann Schedel in 1493. Much of the history concerns itself with the biblical period but it was brought right up to date in this and later editions. It synthesises two chronological systems, that of Creation in year 1 and that of Christendom. All together there were some thirty-three incunabula editions. Indeed it is claimed that the 'Fasciculus' is only the second printed book by a living author pre-dated only by Robertus Valturius' 'De Re Militari' (1472). The 1474 edition includes the first view of an actual city in a printed book, that of Cologne identified by its unfinished cathedral. Most of the views in this and future editions were in fact imaginary and in some cases were used more than once. Rolewinck spent more than fifty years of his life in a Carthusian monastery in Cologne. None of the early editions contained a map. It was this same Venice edition by Erhard Ratdolt first published in 1480 which introduced a T-O map. The edition also introduced an imaginary view of "Britannia". The second edition of 1481 offered here also contained a view but printed from a different block. As elsewhere in the book the block was used to illustrate other towns. An early cataloguer remarked 'off hand I cannot think of an earlier printed book with an English view .' The text is in 59 lines of Gothic type with red rubrication. The text on this leaf records the events between the years 194 and 224 AD. Campbell (Early Maps) believes that as printer of the T-O map of 1480 and the first illustrated edition of Pomponius Mela in 1482 Ratdolt may indeed have been the mapmaker and therefore also possibly the producer of these views. Rare first and only edition published in the Northern Netherlands of a theological treatise presenting regimens for the best way of life for canons and priests. Especially the many dangers threatening monastic and cloistered life are dealt with at length. The first edition in the Low Countries was printed in Alost by Thierry Martens ca. 1486/89. The present Delft edition was printed by the prolific printer-publisher Christiaen Snellaert. Werner Rolewick (1425-1502) was a German Carthusian monk who composed many theological and devotional treatises and some important historical works, of which his Fascilucum temporum, a general history of the world, is by far the best known. First edition of the Dutch translation (first Latin ed.: Cologne, 1474). Incunabula are usually not known for their lavish appearance and content. However, the chronicle Fasciculus temporum is a positive exception to this general picture. It is a typographical and illustrative masterpiece. The work is a universal chronicle from the creation of the world up to 1474 by the Carthusian monk and historian Rolewinck (1425-1502) and forms in fact a synthesis between religious and secular history, as practised more often in humanisn. The organisation of this text presents a peculiarity typical of the medieval concept of history. Rolowinck thus takes the birth of Christ as his starting point and relates the events that took place since that date, on the one hand, by progressing to the end of the fifteenth century and, on the other hand, by going back to Genesis. This parallel established between the two Testaments is far from insignificant. Medieval theologians believed that the Old Testament announces the New, which in turn confirms the Old. This two-fold walk through time is not without posing some layout problems, especially if one wants to make this text accessible without distorting the chronological order established by the author. Only an ingenious typographer has been able to succeed in such a challenge. The only solution available to him was to reverse the biblical data with respect to those after the life of Jesus. It is widely believed that Johann Veldener was able to solve the technical difficulties caused by this publication on his own. This printer is one of the key figures in the spread of typographic art in the Low Countries, opening the first printing house in Leuven and helping Caxton in Bruges and the Brothers of the Common Life in Brussels to open their houses. He also provided typefaces for many 15th-c. printing houses in the Low Countries. This version contains textual additions relating to the history of the dioceses of Utrecht, Brabant, Holland and Zeeland. Text in Gothic type, illustrated with numerous timelines - the chronology of the text follows a double time-line, measuring time from both the Creation and the birth of Christ, demanding a remarkably complex typographical layout - and woodcuts (chronological and geographical schematic figures, Tower of Babel, Noah's Ark, the Destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, etc.).The work was immensely popular, being printed 32 times in the 15th century, including translations into French, German and Dutch.
