First edition of one of the rarest great books in the history of science. Boscovich's masterpiece, A Theory of Natural Philosophy Reduced to a single Law of the Actions Existing in Nature, is one of the fundamental books in the history of scientific thought and is 'the birth of atomic physics' (Printing and the Mind of Man). Boscovich's atomic theory arose from an attempt to build a comprehensive physics based on the ideas of Newton and Leibniz, and to go beyond both to produce new results. The success of the Theoria was immediate and widespread. It was highly influential on British physicists: Priestley, Robinson, Faraday, Clerk Maxwell, Lord Kelvin, J. J. Thompson, and Niels Bohr. All acknowledged its importance. In 1898 Lord Kelvin said 'My present assumption is Boscovichianism pure and simple.' 'The Theoria was not only the first general mathematical theory of atomism . but more specifically it was the first scientific theory: to treat all the ultimate constituents of matter as identical; to employ finite numbers of point particles; to eliminate Newtonian mass as a primary quantity, substituting a kinematic basis; to postulate a relational basis for the mathematical treatment of inertia and of all space and time observations; to propose to derive all physical effects from a single law; to eliminate the scale-free similarity property of the Newtonian law, introducing natural lengths into continuous laws so as to determine unique equilibrium positions and other scale-fixed properties; to employ a power series to represent an observable.'An examination of this list shows that where Boscovich was original he anticipated the aims, and many of the features, of twentieth-century atomic physics. Nor is this all that stands to the credit of the Theoria . The Theoria has brilliant passages on continuity, geometry, penetrability, non-interacting universes which might float undisturbed through each other, forms of matter with very high densities, finite universes, limit points, innermost structure, complex molecular fields, chemistry, chain reactions, probability and the importance of the proportionality of gravitational and inertial mass .' (16),371,(4) pp. First French edition. - First published in Dutch De open-deure, tot het verborgen heydendom, Leyden 1651. 'This is the earliest European account of Hinduism in Southern India. Rogerius left in 1630 and worked in Palicatta (Coromandel) for ten years. He then went to Batavia where he served the Portuguese Church for five years. He repatriated in 1647 and settled in Gouda where he died in 1649' (Landwehr, VOC). This is the first work in Europe to publish the translation of a piece of Sanscrit literature (the Sayings of Bhartrhari, on pp. 291-339). The curious plates depict processions, ceremonies and self-chastisement. This copy belonged to François Pétis de la Croix (1653-1713) with his owner's entry and purchase date August 28, 1697, and his notes and comments in the margins. Pétis de la Croix, son of the king's interpreter for oriental languages was educated to succeed his father. He was an eminent orientalist, spoke arab, turkish and the languages of Persia, Tartar and Ethiopia. He was an attaché to the navy, the Foreign Office and interpretor to the King (Howgego p.812). Roger prepared probably the most thorough description of south-Indian Hinduism to be published before the end of the 19th century (Howgego p.903).
