A vivid record of the life and work of Arthur Machen (Arthur Llewellyn Jones), a Welsh author and mystic of the 1890s and early 20th century best known for his influential supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction, including the now considered classic novella, The Great God Pan. Written by British author, poet and compiler of anthologies, John Gawsworth. As a young man he ran the Twyn Barlwm Pres, a small press with its title inspired by the mountain of Twyn Barlwm in South Wales, beloved by Arthur Machen. Machen was one of the surviving writers of the 1890s he admired and befriended, and this biography is Gawsworth's longest piece of written work, though he could find no publisher for it in the 1930s. This copy previously owned by Godfrey Brangham, the co-editor of Arthur Machen'sSelected Letters (1988) and of a selection of Machen's introductions and forewords, The Day's Portion (1991). In the original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with a touch of fading to the spine and the bookplate of Godfrey Brangham to the front paste down.
