"Interwoven with the problems of Rose is the story of the other oft-divided branches of the Shanahan clan in its feasts and its feuds, its wakes and weddings, with the rich ones and the repressed ones, the social climbers and the drunkards. From behind the lace curtains of solid respectability comes now a revelation of all the laughter and tears of a way of life neither truly Irish nor typically American, yet somehow both."
