"During the heavy typhoid epidemic at Gottingen (1757-63), a careful account of the disease was published, in 1762, by Johann Georg Roederer, professor at the Gottingen clinic, and his assistant Wagler, who made autopsies of the cases. The intestinal lesions were carefully noted, but the authors regarded the disease as identical with intermittent fever and dysentery." Garrison, History of medicine, p. 404. Garrison goes on to remark that "Perhaps for this very reason the unique monograph was soon forgotten. . ." But judging by the six editions listed in Wellcome, IV, p. 546, from 1762 to 1841, it was not forgotten as soon as Garrison suggests. Heinrich August Wrisberg (1739-1808) is known for the discovery of the nervus intermedius ("nerve of Wrisberg") described in his Observationes anatomicae de quinto pare nervorum encephali (Gottingen, 1777). Roederer was appointed first professor of obstetrics at the University of Göttingen by George II in 1751. Also included is *De Extractione Cataractae*, Georg Friedrich Sigwart's dissertation on cataract surgery; two works of medical forensics by Michael Alberti and Johann Juncker, (both professors of medicine at the newly founded University of Halle); and other works related to physical therapy and mental health. These include Franz Joseph von Oberkamp's treatise on pulmonary embolism, *Idiopathia Vomicae Pulmonis Lapsum Excipientis*, illustrated with a fine engraved folding plate depicting three views of the human skull; and Johannes Dieterich's treatise on hemorrhoids, *De Haemorrhoidibus Cristatis*. Johann Georg Roederer (1726-1763), "geboren am 15. Mai 1726 in Straßburg, studirte zuerst in seiner Vaterstadt, namentlich bei Fried dem Vater, ging 1747 nach Paris zu Grégoire und später nach London zu Smellie und W. Hunter. Ueber Leyden kam er dann 1750 nach Göttingen, wo er auf Grund seiner Diss. inaugur. de foetu perfecto in demselben Jahre promovirt wurde. Als nun im J. 1751 in der Berliner Charité die erste deutsche Hebammenschule nach dem Vorbilde der in Straßburg bestehenden gegründet wurde, schlug auf Antrag Haller's der Curator der Universität Göttingen G. A. v. Münchhausen dem König Georg III. die Errichtung einer Entbindungsanstalt an der Universität in Göttingen vor und durch Haller's Einfluß wurde J. G. R. mit der Direction dieser ersten deutschen Lehranstalt für Geburtshülfe betraut, welche bereits im November 1751 eröffnet wurde. R., damals erst 25 Jahre alt, hat in rastloser Thätigkeit als Lehrer und Schriftsteller in den verschiedensten Zweigen der Medicin gewirkt. Anfangs Extraordinarius, wurde er 1754 Ordinarius und Leibarzt des Königs von England. Sein Hauptwerk: "Elementa artis obstetriciae in usum praelectionum academicarum" erschien 1753 in erster, 1759 in zweiter, 1766 in dritter Auflage; es wurde ins Deutsche, Französische und Italienische übersetzt und ist besonders ausgezeichnet durch die knappe Darstellung und vorzügliche Schilderung des Geburtsmechanismus. Nach Haller's Weggang von Göttingen übernahm er auch die Professur der Anatomie und Chirurgie, las ferner gerichtliche Medicin, und hielt Secirübungen und Operationsübungen an der Leiche ab. 1756 erschienen seine: "Observationum medicarum de partu laborioso decades duae" und 1759: "Icones uteri humani observationibus illustrate". Dabei hatte er eine ausgebreitete medicinische, chirurgische und obstetricische Praxis. Sein großer Ruf und seine Bekanntschaft mit französischen Officieren während des siebenjährigen Krieges veranlaßten seine Berufung zur Operation einer hochgestellten Dame nach Paris. Auf dem Wege dahin erkrankte er aber in Straßburg am Typhus und starb, noch nicht 37 Jahre alt, am 4. April 1763.
