Grimshaw was much involved with the Bacon Society of American (NYC), which flourished with the multitude of speculations about Bacon's life and work in that period. J. E. Roe was a particularly imaginative writer on the topic. Provenance leads us to the signature and pencil notes on endpaper and in margins throughout, of Edith Dillin Stelling, who has signed in pencil and presented (in parenthesis) to her son, with the admonition "Bill: lend this book to NO one!". She has penned a summary of Bacon's life for orientation on the verso of half title. Her marginal notes throughout are in light pencil.
