Paperback. Zustand: Good. Explosion Rocks Springfield is eighty one-page iterations of the following line: The Friday evening gas explosion in Springfield leveled a strip club next to a day care. Each iteration consists of analytical-philosophic queries, lyrical diffractions, and paranarrative documentary. Sixteen sub-topic variations appear. Every single word of the primary thematic line is exfoliated, extended, and exploded, multiplied, in a fugal structure, seeking the effects of content density, tension, and return. Continual re-figuration of all themata invites the reader to experience a pleasurable engagement with a material transparency that is neither prepackaged ("found") nor fancied from thin air ("inspired"). What is explosion to a slab of drywall? What is "drywall" exactly? HEIGH-HO! Why do people strip? What is "day care"? Why "day"? What is night care? Why daylight why daylight why daylight. What is "care" exactly? Gas. Wherefrom gas? Raised in southern California, experimental poet, playwright, and labor activist Rodrigo Toscano is the author of seven collections of poetry including Collapsible Poetics Theater (2008), which was chosen for the National Poetry Series, and Deck of Deeds (2012). Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. We tend to only see the end result when we watch masters in action. How easily gymnasts fly through the air, or pianists play complex pieces, or artists make masterworks. What we do not see are the 10,000 hours of hard work that went in to that one moment. We become masters of our life through the same long term step by step process. There are simple practices for wealth and for poverty, for health and sickness, and for good relationships and bad ones. This book outlines them all and shows you how your daily practices added up over time lead you to your ultimate destination. Lane, Phyllis (illustrator).…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE Rodrigo Blanco Calder n has established himself as one of the great voices of Latin American literature with his debut novel The Night, and his short story collection Sacrifices. Simpatia is a suspenseful novel with unexpected twists and turns about the agony of Venezuela and the collapse of Chavismo. Simpatia is set in the Venezuela of Nicolas Maduro amid a mass exodus of the intellectual class who have been leaving their pets behind. Ulises Kan, the protagonist and a movie buff, receives a text message from his wife, Paulina, saying she is leaving the country (and him). Ulises is not heartbroken but liberated by Paulina's departure. Two other events end up disrupting his life even further: the return of Nadine, an unrequited love from the past, and the death of his father-in-law, General Martin Ayala. Thanks to Ayala's will, Ulises discovers that he has been entrusted with a mission-to transform Los Argonautas, the great family home, into a shelter for abandoned dogs. If he manages to do it in time, he will inherit the luxurious apartment that he had shared with Paulina. This novel centers on themes of family and orphanhood in order to address the abuse of power by a patrilineage of political figures in Latin America, from Sim n Bolivar to Hugo Chavez. The untranslatable title, Simpatia, which means both sympathy and charm, ironically references the qualities these political figures share. In a morally bankrupt society, where all human ties seem to have dissolved, Ulises is like a stray dog picking up scraps of sympathy. Can you really know who you love? What is, in essence, a family? Are abandoned dogs proof of the existence or non-existence of God? Ulises unknowingly embodies these questions, as a pilgrim of affection in a post-love era.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Set in Guatemala, these spare and beautiful tales are linked by themes of magic, violence, and the fragility of existence. Paul Bowle's translation perfectly captures Rey Rosa's stories of the haunted lives of ordinary people in present-day Central America. "A genuinely surprising and original set of stories?a sense of violent unease shading into terror drifts up from every line?his writing has a sharp, almost sadistic edge." ?The Times Literary Supplement "Compelling in the extreme?these twelve tales (that) boast of hidden dangers and lurking terrors, are written in a deceptively undramatic style, with masterful restraint. Stories that continue to disturb and delight long after they are laid to rest." ?Blitz Twelve tales--many evoking the uncanny, most with surprise endings--explore how people seek to gain power from others. . . . Rey Rosa writes about danger and precarious stability in an effective, straightforward style." ?Kirkus Reviews Rodrigo Rey Rosa (born November 4, 1958) is a Guatemalan writer. He has based many of his writings and stories on legends and myths that are indigenous to Latin American as well as North Africa. A number of Rey Rosa's works have been translated into English, including; The Path Doubles Back (by Paul Bowles), "The Pelcari Project," The Beggar's Knife, The African Shore, and Severina.…

Hardback. Zustand: Fair. ?This is a beautiful farewell to two extraordinary people. It enthralled and moved me, and it will move and enthrall anyone who has ever entered the glorious literary world of Gabriel García Márquez.??Salman Rushdie? In A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes Rodrigo Garcia finds the words that cannot be said, the moments that signal all that is possible to know about the passage from life to death, from what love brings and the loss it leaves. With details as rich as any giant biography, you will find yourself grieving as you read, grateful for the profound art that remains a part of our cultural heritage.??Walter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Down the River Unto the Sea?An intensely personal reflection on [Garcia's] father's legacy and his family bonds, tender in its treatment and stirring in its brevity.??Booklist (starred review)The son of one of the greatest writers of our time?Nobel Prize winner and internationally bestselling icon Gabriel García Márquez?remembers his beloved father and mother in this tender memoir about love and loss.In March 2014, Gabriel García Márquez, one of the most acclaimed writers of the twentieth century, came down with a cold. The woman who had been beside him for more than fifty years, his wife Mercedes Barcha, was not hopeful; her husband, affectionately known as ?Gabo,? was then nearly 87 and battling dementia. I don't think we'll get out of this one, she told their son Rodrigo. Hearing his mother?s words, Rodrigo wondered, ?Is this how the end begins? To make sense of events as they unfolded, he began to write the story of García Márquez?s final days. The result is this intimate and honest account that not only contemplates his father?s mortality but reveals his remarkable humanity. Both an illuminating memoir and a heartbreaking work of reportage, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes transforms this towering genius from literary creator to protagonist, and paints a rich and revelatory portrait of a family coping with loss. At its center is a man at his most vulnerable, whose wry humor shines even as his lucidity wanes. Gabo savors affection and attention from those in his orbit, but wrestles with what he will lose?and what is already lost. Throughout his final journey is the charismatic Mercedes, his constant companion and the creative muse who was one of the foremost influences on Gabo?s life and his art.Bittersweet and insightful, surprising and powerful, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes celebrates the formidable legacy of Rodrigo?s parents, offering an unprecedented look at the private family life of a literary giant. It is at once a gift to Gabriel García Márquez?s readers worldwide, and a grand tribute from a writer who knew him well. ?You read this short memoir with a feeling of deep gratitude. Yes, it is a moving homage by a son to his extraordinary parents, but also much more: it is a revelation of the hidden corners of a fascinating life. A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes is generous, unsentimental and wise.? ?Juan Gabriel Vásquez, author of The Sound of Things Falling?A warm homage filled with both fond and painful memories.? ?Kirkus "Garcia?s limpid prose gazes calmly at death, registering pain but not being overcome by it . . . the result is a moving eulogy that will captivate fans of the literary lion." ? Publishers Weekly.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. "If you ever sing those songs again, they will kill your daddy," the boy's mother warned him after he continued to sing one of the hymns of the Chilean revolution in public. Rodrigo Dorfman, the son of prominent dissidents, was six years old when his family fled Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship a month after the CIA-backed coup in 1973. In his fascinating memoir, Dorfman writes about his experiences as an exile and a migrant. He was dragged away from his homeland, "seduced by the thrill of flying on airplanes and visiting far-away places," but reassured the family would return soon. They fled to Argentina, and then to Havana, Paris, Amsterdam and finally Bethesda, Maryland. His muse and identity were "sealed and stamped with that curse, with that blessing, with that irresistible myth: the eternal return." Mapping the memory of exile, he remembers the contradiction of living with his seething anger at losing his home and his resistance to settling down. Rebellion was an ancestral badge of honor he wore proudly. At 18, he returned to Chile and fought against the fascist dictatorship, running for his life with bullets and tear gas flying by. Dorfman's involvement in the resistance movement there planted the seeds for his future life as a community-centered documentary filmmaker. His restless search for a place to call his own led to his wandering-around the United States, to Morocco and Turkey and the Path of Sufism. He finally made a home in the American South, where he became a "Latino" and found kinship with other immigrants who settled there. This compelling narrative recounts a displaced man's life-long quest to establish family, roots and a sense of belonging by bearing witness to what he calls the "Nuevo South.".…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. If we lose our memories, are we still ourselves? Is identity merely a collection of electrical impulses? What separates us from animals, or from computers? From Plato to Westworld, these questions have fascinated and befuddled philosophers, artists, and scientists for centuries. In The Forgetting Machine, neuroscientist Rodrigo Quian Quiroga explains how the mechanics of memory illuminates these discussions, with implications for everything from understanding Alzheimer's disease to the technology of Artificial Intelligence. You'll also learn about the research behind what Quian Quiroga coined 'Jennifer Aniston Neurons,' cells in the human brain that are responsible for representing specific concepts, such as recognizing a certain celebrity's face. The discovery of these neurons opens new windows into the workings of human memory. In this accessible, fascinating look at the science of remembering, discover how we turn perceptions into memories, how language shapes our experiences, and the crucial role forgetting plays in human recollection. You'll see how electricity, chemistry, and abstraction combine to form something more than the human brain, the human mind. And you'll gain surprising insight into what our brains can tell us about who we are. The Forgetting Machine takes us on a journey through science and science fiction, philosophy and identity, using what we know about how we remember (and forget) to explore the very roots of what makes us human.…
