Half in French and half in Latin, the Demosterion presents an introduction to Paracelsian medicine, a distillation of its principles into three hundred bilingual aphorisms, a work on divination, a dictionary of terms, a chiromantic essay and a balneological and mineralogical description of Brittany. Together, the texts address alchemy, geomancy, astrology, ethics, dietetics, physiology, pathology and cures for ulcers, leprosy, edema, plague, gout and paralysis. Schematic, the first plate outlines ailments and their cures according to Paracelsian principles. The second plate has a large woodcut with the Moon phases of a sidereal month, noting enterprises and therapies favored on each day along with astrological influences. Sous la forme d'un dialogue, il y compare la médecine d'Hippocrate et celle de Paracelse, pour montrer qu'elles sont tout à fait compatibles. Roch Le Baillif de La Rivière (1540-1598) médecin et alchimiste, était un ardent partisan de la doctrine de Paracelse. Accusé de pratiquer une médecine illégale, au terme d'un procès, la Faculté de Médecine lui interdit d'exercer sa profession dans la ville de Paris. Le Baillif bénéficiant de soutiens importants, le jugement ne fût jamais appliqué. Par la suite, il a été nommé médecin officiel du Parlement de Bretagne en 1588. Ses oeuvres ouvrent la voie à la branche des "chimistes" médecins qui seront en vogue à la cour d'Henri IV : Bernard Gilles Penot, Claude Dariot et Turquet de Mayerne. "Dans sa dédicace adressée à Henri IV, Le Baillif, remontant jusqu'à Apollon, déclare avec emphase que Paracelse a remis dans toute sa splendeur la médecine d'Hippocrate. . Roch Le Baillif achève ainsi sa carrière d'auteur paracelsien par une oeuvre certes plus ouverte aux compromis que 'Le Demosterion', mais qui ne cède guère en poids à son premier ouvrage du point de vue de la propagande en faveur du maître d'Einsiedeln".
