Derrière le pseudonyme de Roch Gray se cache la baronne Hélène d'Oettingen (1887-1950). Artiste d'origine russe, elle fut la muse et l'égérie du cercle d'Apollinaire. Personnalité polyvalente, elle s'illustra sous divers noms : François Angiboult pour la peinture et Roch Gray pour la littérature. Elle a joué un rôle crucial dans le soutien aux avant-gardes, notamment en reprenant la revue Les Soirées de Paris. Ses écrits, rares et souvent confidentiels, sont imprégnés de l'esprit moderne, mêlant souvenirs personnels et réflexions sur le milieu artistique de l'époque. Infimes traces de mouillures à la couverture, sinon en excellente condition.La baronne Hélène Oettingen (1885-1950), d'origine ukrainienne, après un divorce d'avec un officier du tsar, s'installe en France avec son cousin le peintre Serge Férat. Le duo soutient la bohème parisienne et c'est tout naturellement qu'Hélène, entourée des artistes de son temps, rejoint les rangs de l'Académie Jullian. Elle expose à plusieurs reprises au Salon des Indépendants et tient également un salon où se retrouve l'avant-garde russe. Après la révolution de 1917, sa fortune est gelée et la baronne doit vendre sa collection d'oeuvres du Douanier Rousseau pour assurer son train de vie. Sa production littéraire débute par une étude sur Apollinaire (1919), puis Henri Rousseau (1921) et Van Gogh (1924). Figure aristocratique de la Belle Époque, elle signe ses oeuvres de trois pseudonymes masculins : Roch Grey pour ses romans et essais, Léonard Pieux pour ses poèmes et François Angiboult pour sa peinture. Elle mourra d'une leucémie en 1950. …

One of 52 copies; Chevaux de minuit is one of Picasso and Iliazd's most successful collaborations. 'Picasso's stylistic range from the animals of the 1942 Buffon to these horses is a vast one. Here he has restricted himself to an extreme simplification of outline, accented only by the drypoint burr, yet vividly descriptive of movement. The typographic layout by Iliazd carefully balances and sometimes echoes the design of the plates' (Artist and the Book) The poem Chevaux de Minuit by Roch Grey (pseudonym of Baroness Hà là ne Oettingen) was edited by Iliazd after her death in 1950. The two had been friends and Ilia Zdanevich felt that the writer's work had been under-appreciated in her lifetime, having not received recognition in either mainstream or avant-garde literary circles. It was his aim, especially in the later part of his career to bring to light the work of marginal writers by collaborating with famous artists, many of whom were his close companions.
