Cicero, the great mediator, has enshrined the significance of ancient Rome in the hearts of many, and our debt to him is one of the spirit, of enlightenment and charity, of love of truth and liberty. So great is that debt that another volume in the Library is reserved for Cicero, the philosopher. Professor Rolfe has written a defense of Cicero, such as will commend itself to twentieth century thought. That Ciceros star has, at times, suffered an eclipse is not astonishing. Ignorance may blot out even a gospel of light. But the appraisal of the future is apt to be more cordial than it has sometimes been in the past.
