Il est vraisemblable que c'est là qu'il connut Benjamin Franklin, qui le fit choisir comme aumônier du corps expéditionnaire français envoyé en Amérique. Dans son ouvrage il parle des différentes Loges contemporaines telles que "La Candeur composée des membres distingués par leur naissance" de la "Loge des Neuf-Soeurs qui réunit presque tout ce qu'il y a de plus célèbre dans les sciences les lettres et les arts.".
