The historical novel and drama interest each and everyone more at…present than do similar works belonging to the realm of pure fiction. '! Although Belinskii was writing in 1841, his statement could equally well apply to the Russia of a century later, when the interest in historical fiction had become, if anything, more intense. In fact, the abundance of Soviet historical novels and plays tempts one to believe Heine, when he said that the people want their history handed to them by the poet, not the historian. The infatuation with history to which Belinskii referred was not, however, indigenous to Russia; it was part of a rage, largely inspired by Waiter Scott, which had swept western Europe in the early nine teenth century, and which soon spread to Russia. Today, Scott's star has been eclipsed in the West, but it still burns brightly in the Soviet Union. Indeed, it can be said that the West has not only rejected Scott, but, to a considerable extent, the historical novel and playas well. As one writer recently put it: 'The reading public, brought up on a strict diet of sex and science, prefers to take its history undiluted in the form of unexpurgated memoirs and frank biographies.

Bound limited edition set of the portraits + Camel March taken from a proof set from the 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, This is one of just 220 copies, The limitation page is hand-numbered in CHP customary reddish/brown ink, this copy being 214, b…ound by the Fine Bindery and printed by the Burlington Press in 1997. These are superb reproductions of the plates from the '26 SP in full colour. Bound in pale beige paper covered boards with title printed to front and with darker brown cloth spine. T.E. Lawrence commissioned illustrations for Seven Pillars of Wisdom from leading artists of the day. They were reproduced in colour in his lavish 1926 edition of the subscribers' abridgement. The most important of the illustrations were portraits. These showed readers not just faces, but also the exotic clothing worn by the Arab irregulars. The forty-one Seven Pillars Portraits are reproduced here full-page in the original colours, together with William Roberts' remarkable double-page 'Camel March'. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wid…e-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
