Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Jean Oldham (illustrator). 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. First Edition, First Impression: True Detective Mysteries. Vol. VII, No. 6 (September 1927). New York: New Metropolitan Fiction, Inc., 1927. Softcover, pictorial wraps. Original 25-cent issue. A classic early True Detective pulp featuring a dramatic painted cover design by Jean Oldham. Profusely illustrated with period adverts. Cover story: "The Murder at Pinehurst." Additional cover-featured stories include "Nightlife Polly," "The Crime Without a Clue," and "What Happened to Bubbles?" Notable among the stories is Cy Caldwell's "The Mystery of the Vanished Car," a Sherlock Holmes-inspired detective tale featuring youthful sleuths who emulate Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, referring to those detective characters; the mystery story is narrated by "Dr. Watson, Jr." This issue includes contributions: Lowell Howard Morrow, W. Adolphe Roberts, Dan B. Hosmer, Renee Hanley, Cy Caldwell, Isabel Steven, John Settleworth, John H. Kern, Mark Mellon, Arthur Hallack, Carl Easton Williams, and E. M. Johnson. Profusely illustrated and complete with period advertising throughout, making this issue an excellent example of late-1920s American true-crime pulp culture. An evocative and collectible Metropolitan publication from the formative years of True Detective Mysteries. Extensive period advertising includes: Maybelline, Dentine Gum, Wrigley's Spearmint Gum, Listerine, cigarettes, hair color, beauty treatments, teeth whitening products, electrical correspondence schools, phonographic reproduction equipment, and other late-1920s consumer advertisements. Condition: Good Plus. Wear to crown and heel of spine with rubbing along spine edges; all lettering remains visible and readable. General edgewear and light rubbing to covers, with minor chipping at top and bottom edges. Front cover remains bright and visually appealing. Stapled binding is sound; staples clean and not rusted. Internally, 112 pages, light, clean, and unmarked. Pages 11, 62 and 106 show small portions clipped apparently from former advertising removal. Other 109 pages remain intact. Overall a solid, complete example with strong cover presentation. More photos on request and with our pleasure. Book will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available.
