The second edition.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and eleven plates and maps.Two leaves, the first signed D*, with pages numbered 21*-24* inserte…d following p. 24.Collated, complete.Errata included in 'Remains' and the 'Addenda'.The remains on John Tweddell, a collection of his papers and letters compiled by the young man before his early death of sudden fever in Athens in 1799. A scandal surrounded the remains, as Tweddell's detailed travel letters, journals, and pictures disappeared due to the apparently neglect and appropriation of Lord Elgin. This work and the search for Tweddell's remains was undertaken by his brother, Robert Tweddell.'Remains of John Tweddell' is in part a memorial to John Tweddell, an also an attack on Lord Elgin. The young John Tweddell had an interest in becoming a diplomat, started on a European tour in 1795, travelling across the continent and meeting many prominent figures of the day, including Madame de Stael and Jacques Necker.Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto of the front endpaper, 'F. E. Foug' and 'With R. Hess' best wishes, Eton, Election 1835'. In a full diced calf binding. Externally, a little worn, with a tide mark to the boards. Rubbing has resulted in a little loss of leather to the tail of the front board and head of the rear board, with a little light rubbing to the spine and joints. Crack to the head of the front joint. Light bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot and handling mark, and a patch of discolouration to the head of the first few pages. Very Good. Various (illustrator). book.
