Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition Thus. Complete four volume set. The first Smirke illustrated edition. Full calf leather bindings. Spines with four raised bands, green leather title and volume labels, gilt decoration to compartments. Boards panelled in gilt and blind. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt. Some rubbing and light marking to bindings. Slight fading to top edges of boards. Good solid bindings with no cracking to the joints. Light foxing to the text and slightly heavier foxing to the plates. French language. Provenance: From the library of Williamstrip Park, Coln St. Aldwyns - seat of the Hicks Beach family. Signed in pencil by W. Beach to leading blank in volume I. Included in George Vicaire's 'Livres du XIXe Siecle 1801-1893' (Vol. 5) where he states that he has not been able to locate a copy, and the edition is not found in the BnF. He cites Bulletin de la Librairie Morgand et Fatout (number 2772), where a set was listed at 225 Francs: 'This edition is remarkable for the suite of 24 engravings executed after drawings by Smirke'.
