In London with the support of Lord Aberdeen, Logan studied at the Royal Academy. He became a journalist, and then a clerk in an architect's office. He was employed for a time by the Highland Society of London, but never settled to a career. Logan's major work was The Scottish Gael, or Celtic Manners as preserved among the Highlanders (2 vol.), published in 1831. It was based on walking tours he had made in the Scottish Highlands and islands during the previous decade, during which he collected Gaelic antiquities.Robert Ronald McIan (1803?1856), also Robert Ranald McIan, was a Scottish actor and painter. He is best known for romanticised depictions of Scottish clansmen, their battles and domestic life. He is perhaps best known for his illustrations in The Clans of The Scottish Highlands, published in 1845 on the centenary of the Jacobite Rising with text by James Logan. It proved so popular that it was reissued in 1857, after his death. His depictions of clansmen fanned the romantic revival of interest in Gaeldom that was led by Queen Victoria, to whom the book was dedicated., Size : Folio, Illustrated with superb hand-coloured lithographs depicting Scottish Figures, Displaying their Dress, Tartans, Arms, Armorial Insignia and Social OccupationsColoured armorial frontispieces, dedication leaf printed in gilt, list of subscribers, 72 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates after McIan (some heightened with gum-Arabic), a few plates with imprint shaved or cropped, 'Gordon' plate cropped affecting fishing rod in image., Volume : Two volumes., Ex-Libris of John Donaldson Craig. , References : Abbey Life 426; Colas 1892; Lipperheide 1032 A fine and handsome copy finely hand coloured plates with protective tissue.
