Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The studious reader of Mr. Arnold's verse will have added richly to his store of Oriental knowledge infused in every page of this delightful volume. No other English poet has ever thrown his genius and his art so thoroughly into the work of translating Eastern ideas as Mr. Arnold has done in his splendid paraphrases of language contained in these mighty epics. The poem abounds with imagery of Eastern luxuriousness and sensuousness; the air seems laden with the spicy odours of the tropics, and the verse has a richness and a melody sufficient to captivate the senses of the dullest. This book is an over-view of the various branches of languages spoken in the east. The book covers 1) The Aryan Family, 2) Dravidian Family, 3) Kolarian Family, 4) Tibeto-Burman Family, 5) Khasi Family, 6) Tai Family, 7) Mon-Anam Family, and 7) the Malayan Family. The book accompanied by Two Language-Maps to make it more interesting. The book was first published in 2000. About the Author:-Robert Needham Cust (1821 1909) was a British administrator and judge in colonial India apart from being an Anglican evangelist and linguist. He was part of the Orientalism movement and active within the British and Foreign Bible Society. He was a prolific writer and wrote on a range of subjects. He was educated at Eton College, Trinity College, Cambridge, Haileybury (184042) and the College of Fort William, Calcutta, graduating from the last-named institution in 1844. He then worked in the Bengal Civil Services for the East India Company, in Hoshiarpur and Ambala (assistant to the magistrate), in India. After retiring to England Cust devoted himself to scientific research, philanthropy, and magisterial and municipal duties, declining reappointments in India. He was a member and officer in many scientific, philanthropic, and religious societies and a prolific writer. He was one of the few Victorian intellectuals to oppose the racist theories popular at the time. Along with John Bradford Whiting, Cust was against the abandonment of Henry Venn's policy of developing indigenous leadership in Africa. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. Original printed wraps 19x25cm. 16pp. Covers dusted, reinforced internally with archival tape to the hinges and edges, and externally to the spine with a little loss to spine ends and corners. Interiors very good, lightly tanned with some spotting, and inscription to final page. Suakin, a key trade and Hajj port on the Sudanese Red Sea coast, was at this time a strategic location in the Mahdist War. Dated 15 October 1887 to Moore's Introduction, this coincides with military operations in the region, with Suakin itself coming under Mahdist attack on 20 December. Watson (1844-1916) had served under Gordon in Sudan during 1874-5, and participated in the survey of the White Nile. He performed special intelligence duties in the Anglo-Egyptian War (1882), then appointed as Governor General of the Red Sea Littoral while much of Sudan was under Dervish control. He handed over to Kitchener in 1886, who was based at Suakin during 1886-8. Wilson compiled this work from R.N. Cust's vocabulary, with Khalifah Safwah and Khalifah Abdullah assisting on the Beni-Amer, and Idris Effendi on the Hadendoa, the latter a Madhi supporting nomadic sub-division of the Beja. The whole was revised by Marcopoli Bey. The vocabulary is presented in 7 columns (one for English, and 2 each for Arabic, Hadendowa and Beni-Amer in Latin and original scripts), and includes some short phrases. Scarce. (Ref. Dictionary of Irish Biography).

Publisher's peach cloth, gilt publisher's stamp to upper board, red and blind-stamped decoration, leaves largely unopened. With two colour folding maps titled 'A Language Map of India and Its Border Lands' (45 x 46cm) & 'A Language Map of Further India and the Indian Archipelago' (51 x 58cm), indicating the distribution of language families in India and South East Asia. Cloth slightly stained, two small holes to head of spine, some sporadic spotting to contents and maps, some leaves slightly ragged at bottom edge where they have been opened. Generally very good. Robert Needham Cust (1821-1909) was a British colonial administrator, linguist, and honorary librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before working for the East India Company. Returning to England in 1867, Cust devoted himself to scientific research, philanthropy, and magisterial and municipal duties. This publication explores the attributes of numerous language families prevalent in the East Indies, namely the Aryan, Dravidian, Kolarian, Tibeto-Burman, Khasi, Tai, Mon-Anam, and Malayan families. "The author has attempted to fill up a vacuum, the inconvenience of which pressed itself on his notice. Much had been written about the languages of the East Indies, but the extent of our present knowledge had not even been brought to a focus. It occurred to him that it might be of use to others to publish in an arranged form the notes which he had collected for his own edification" (p.iii).
