Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Unpaginated, illustrated with full page black and white illustrations facing text pages. Bound in publisher's decorated pink paper-covered boards over tan spine cloth printed in pink, yellow printed endpapers; lacking the dust jacket. Near Fine with light rubbing, several writing impressions, and moderate fading to covers, contemporary child's bookplate and 1/4 inch tear to front free endpaper. Light toning and soiling to contents, occasional small stains, and several pencil scribbles to page [7]. A nice first edition of the pacifist classic. Ferdinand is a large but gentle bull who lives in the Spanish countryside and loves nothing better than to sit under a cork tree and smell the flowers. He resolutely refuses to fight when dragged into a bull ring in the city, choosing to sit down and inhale the scent of the flowers in the ladies' hair: He wouldn't fight and be fierce no matter what they did. He just sat and smelled. And the Banderilleros were mad and the Picadores were madder and the Matador was so mad he cried because he couldn't show off with his cape and sword. Ferdinand is sent home to his favorite cork tree, where he is very happy. It was a defiant story to write in the 1930s, a time of resurgent nationalism and sabre-rattling. Viking Press asked Leaf and Lawson to hold back until "the world settles down," but they refused. The Story of Ferdinand finally published in a small print run ? hence the scarcity of first printings ? and was not much advertised. The book was nonetheless a success, a popular counterpoint to the rhetoric of leaders like General Franco, whose 1936 coup started the Spanish Civil War. Within two years, it was outselling Gone with the Wind in the United States. It still had its detractors, including Hitler ("degenerate propaganda") and Hemingway, who later wrote a counter-narrative about a bull with a shiny coat and clear eyes who loved fighting and was admired by everyone. "Fighting was his obligation and his duty and his joy," he wrote in a passage to win the heart of any dictator, but the hearts of the public were won by Ferdinand. The book has never been out of print. After Franco died in 1975, it could even be published in Spain.
