Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Robert Peary (1856-1920) was an American Arctic explorer. For much of the twentieth century, he was for many years credited with being, in 1909, the first man to reach the North Pole, although this has recently been questioned. Born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, Peary graduated from Bowdoin College in 1877 and joined the US Navy in 1881. He began his Arctic expeditions in 1886, exploring Greenland for a number of years in search of a route to the Pole. Published in 1893, this illustrated book consists of two parts. Drawing on the diaries of the expedition's surgeon, Robert Keely, Part I describes the journey that took Peary to Greenland in 1891. Part II uses the journal of the botanist William Meehan to describe the 1892 expedition to bring the exploring party home. The book includes transcripts of the logs of Richard Pike, captain of the Kite on both voyages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Large 8vo. [2], iii-vii, [2], 2-524, [2] pp. White cloth over beveled-edge boards with gilt lettering and a silver decoration on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine. Textured white endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a folding map, several plates, and numerous in-text illustrations (all in black and white). With two letters dated 1896, each addressed to an A. Lawrence Rotelo, Esquire. The first letter is signed off from a Dr. Ellwood E. Hopkins, and discusses a transaction between the two men: the doctor is confirming Rotelo's telegrammed request to purchase two original drawings done aboard The Kite ("Crossing the Arctic Circle" and "Our Aurora Borealis"). The second letter is from May, and only the first page of the letter is present. The second letter discusses the artist's inspiration and method for the drawing, "Crossing the Arctic Circle". The letter-writer even gives the altitude at which he completed the drawing. According to the complete letter, the two pictures were purchased for $350. Arctic Bibliography 8485. With the log of the relief expedition of the Kite, a history of the group's experiences at McCormick Bay, and the results of the trans-Greenland trek. Also with a study of Inuit tools, clothes, and transportation. Some visible wear to the extremities (including light soiling), a bookplate on the front pastedown and the title page starting but securely attached to the gutter.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, much preferred to the E. Stern edition of the same year, which didn't include a log of the boat's second expedition. This work is Keely and Davis's account of the Kite's first and second expeditions during Peary's 1891-1892 expedition to Greenland. The ship serviced Peary and his crew as they aimed to determine whether the land mass was an island or a peninsula. Robert N. Kneely (1858/9-1932) was the expedition's surgeon and co-wrote this work with Gwilym George Davis (1857-1918), a member of the archaeological association of the University of Pennsylvania, who assisted with the work's illustrations. In Arctic Seas is "a narrative of the relief party's activities at McCormick Bay and on the inland ice; of Mrs. Peary's winter; and the results of Peary's trans-Greenland march" (Arctic Bibliography). Compared with the E. Stern & Co. edition titled In Arctic Seas. A Narrative of the Voyage of the Kite with the Peary Expedition to North Greenland, this edition has more illustrations. No priority has been established. Arctic Bibliography 8485. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard and 8 plates, folding map, illustrations to text. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, silver vignette of a ship in Arctic waters on front cover, bevelled edges, white endpapers. First blank with ownership inscription in pencil with the date stamped in blue ink of assistant cashier "W.O. DeLong Titusville pa: Apr 11 1893", newspaper clipping of obituary of Richard Pike, captain of the Kite, pasted on front pastedown, date of Pike's death written on clipping. Cloth somewhat worn, spine bumped, rubbing, contents clean: a very good copy.
