/ by R. H. Mathews. (Read January 1, 1909). Reprinted from Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, vol. XLVIII, no. 193, 1909. [Philadelphia, PA] : [American Philosophical Society], [1909?]. Octavo (245 x 155 mm), stapled self-wrappers, pp. 1-7, with 12 line-drawn figures in two diagrams illustrating cylcons; a very good copy. This paper, read by surveyor and self-taught anthropologist Robert Hamilton Mathews (1841?1918) before the American Philosophical Society, describes types of ceremonial stones used by Aboriginal groups across the north-western region of New South Wales. The illustrations show the different faces of various examples, including incised markings. (These types of stones would later be referred to in the literature as cylcons, because of their cylindro-conical form). Despite the unifying geometry, a great variety of raw materials, colours, forms and decorative motifs is apparent in these stones.
