Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Bob Gosselin (Author photo) (illustrator). [10], 228, [2] pages. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads: For Helen--Neighbor and friend and comrade in the arts, these words of a family and hope and home. Love, Bob, December 19, 2002, Chestertown, Maryland. DJ has some edgewear and soiling. The author is a professor of creative writing at Washington College. A stunning literary debut: a powerful love story informed by ghostly demarcations between World War II and the Vietnam War. It's just after dawn, June 6, 1982: "Dutch" Potter, an upstate New York bus driver and father of a soldier who's been missing in action in Vietnam for twelve years, snaps and dons his World War II army uniform, collects passengers aboard his BC Transit bus, then veers off route, where he holds seven hostages to his one demand: return my son. This wild ride, taking us from New York to Normandy to Southeast Asia by way of Dutch's memories, hopes, and despair. Father of the Man reveals itself to be a love story: not only between father and son, but between husband and wife, mother and child, the living and the dead. Dutch Potter takes us, along with his hapless passengers, beyond the safe, the ordinary, to a heart of darkness. Very few novels reach, in the way Mooney's does, for understanding and reconciliation between generations--specifically the gap that widened over the war in Vietnam. And what brilliant and brutal conclusions are reached! But what one first notes is the compelling onrush of the story, and the masterful hand beneath its structure and language. This sort of mastery, absent from so much of contemporary American fiction, is present here on every page. What a gift! Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Mooney adds an unusual twist to the usual hostage standoff plot in his debut novel, a solid work in which a dispirited, deranged bus driver from Binghamton, N.Y., hijacks his vehicle and demands to see his son, a Vietnam vet who has been MIA for a dozen years, in return for the release of the seven passengers on board. The novel starts off with a series of WWII flashbacks that establish the patriotism of Dutch Potter, who struggles to find rewarding work after the war and ends up as a bus driver whose unhappy marriage offers little solace. Potter turns his attention to trying to find his MIA son, Jom, but as the years pass Potter becomes increasingly disaffected and his behavior grows erratic. The passenger hijacking represents a quantum leap in his criminal résumé, bringing in not only the local police but also the FBI and finally a Marine officer who specializes in tracking down MIA veterans from the Vietnam era. The plot takes an unlikely positive turn when the officer turns out to have information about Jom's postwar fate, cooling down the standoff in a series of events. As a character study the novel is quietly effective. The author's acute (and timely) take on the psychology of the disgruntled military vet and the well-observed family dynamics establish him as a promising newcomer. In the first work, Charles-Robert Gosselin (17401820) advocates a radical overhaul of the existing system of education in France through the destruction of most existing colleges and the expulsion of 'the crowd of mercenary teachers of which schools are full'. His Plan discusses the advantages of public over private education, recommends more women teachers, and presents his thoughts on suitable locations for schools, the appointment of teachers, and subjects for study. It is followed by a work dedicated to Napoleon by Jean-Baptiste Mailhos, a schoolteacher from the Pyrenees, which lays out a detailed plan for public education, covering different types of school, detailed curricula for each year group, costings, and regulations (including the governance of school libraries). Mailhos advocates better education for girls and provides several tables, including one describing 'the occupations of students up to the age of twenty, when instruction should end'. Written by a long-suffering teacher from Aurillac, the final work is devoted to the troublesome task of teaching children mathematics. Fercoc proposes using diagrammatic tables to engage students' attention and fix ideas firmly in their minds, illustrating three such tables in his text. Small pocket diary (163 x 113 mm), limp roan covers with later handwritten paper label 'Old diaries / Hellier Gosselin', approximately 75 pages neatly written in ink, recording the owner's journey to New Zealand, out via the Cape of Good Hope and Hobart Town, home via Cape Horn (both voyages on s.s. Ruapehu), and his 4-week tour around the North Island; clean and legible throughout. Hellier Gosselin (1849-1924) was a member of the Hertfordshire gentry. He was the owner ofBengeo Hall in Hertford and served two terms as Mayor of that town (1897-98; 1917-19). He was also a member of the Royal Archeaological Society, and a gifted linguist. Gosselin states on the first page of the diary: 'Having been advised by my medical man to take a long sea trip in hopes of getting rid of a long continued illness, I settled to make a start for New Zealand, by what is called the Direct Route'. The Ruapehu left Tilbury on 30 June 1894. The entries in the diary describe the outward voyage; a two-day stop in Hobart in order to load a cargo of silver ore, where Gosselin visits the brewery and the Catholic Cathedral and witnesses snow on Mt. Wellington; the Ruapehu arrives in Auckland 5 days later (August 11) where he stays at the Albert Hotel; takes a carriage to top of Mt. Eden, Mt. Hobson, and One Tree Hill; visits Lake Takapuna ("very dreary in the winter"); attends services at the Catholic cathedral ("a somewhat poor building; the music was, however, excellent"); train trip to the springs atOkoroire, sharing a compartment with a politician who "amused himself by making speeches in Maori"; visit to Tapapa Maori village; carriage to Whakarewarewa, remarking on the deforestation of the landscape, with "thousands of logs scattered around"; buys kauri wood souvenirs and stays in Whakarewarewa ("the hotel is kept by a Norwegian, a most intelligent man, a great anthropologist and good Maori scholar - he has collected a vast amount of material for a Maori dictionary, which he hopes will be published some day"); given a tour of the village by a female guide ("I am told her character is anything but reputable"); carriage to boiling springs at Waiotapu; views devastation caused by eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886; visits Rotorua; Taupo ("most beautiful"); Waikato River; Huka Falls; Waipahihi (Terrace Hotel); coach via Rangitaiki to Napier, where it is snowing ("the Masonic is the best hotel I have come across in New Zealand"); train to Wellington through the Manawatu Gorge ("much spoilt by the railway"); on board train are "a lot of shoddy looking men, said to members of Parliament"; stays at the Royal Oak; "The Prime Minister . made his money in a gold field grog shop"; from Wellington by the steamerTarawera to Lyttelton (a terrible passage during which all the passengers are seasick); in Lyttelton he visits the museum ("the only interesting place in town - there is a good collection of Maori carvings") and rejoins the Ruapehu, which departs for England on September 6 and arrives at Plymouth on October 18 1894.
