A very rare sammelband of two scarce nineteenth-century astronomical works. Robert Goodacre, A Brief Explanation of the Principal Terms made use of in Astronomy. London: Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, 1821. First edition. A compact glossary designed to accompany Goodacre's popular astronomy lectures and demonstrations with globes and orreries. With folding frontispiece diagram. Extremely scarce: not recorded on Library Hub or WorldCat. A.-H. Dufour, Précis du Système Astronomique, pour servir à l'intelligence des six tableaux de M. Sigismond Visconti, et du planisphère représentant les différentes positions de la Terre relativement au Soleil pendant les douze mois de l'année. Paris: Simonneau & Delamarche, 1830. Text volume only, issued to accompany Visconti's celebrated six large astronomical tableaux and planisphere (the seven charts were published separately and are not present here, as often). This 1830 issue is the first Dufour/Simonneau edition, introducing the planisphere. OCLC records very few institutional holdings. Bound together in one volume. A brown cloth hardback - covers rubbed and worn and cloth splitting about half way down the front cover joint. Some tape residue marks near tail of spine (likely to be from library reference label removal). Book plate label of 'Rogers Nottingham' to front pastedown, and library stamp and markings of Nottingham public libraries to rear of title page. Cracking to inner hinges and signs of label removal to first free endpaper, as well as some markings to this spread. Fold-out frontispiece of celestial bodies is present, but in need of consolidation, with tears and creases. The main body of the text of both books is in good condition - nice and clear, with some mild age toning to pages, but all pages present and soundly bound. Although an imperfect volume, 2 very scarce books bound as one. Text in English and French. Fold-out frontispiece + 42pp + (2) Publisher's list + 71pp.  Dimensions: Approximately 178mm high x 110mm wide x 10mm deep. Weight: Approximately 148g.
