Comic novel set in 1830, the conceit being that an elderly Wolfgang Gottlieb ("he prefers the German form of his name") Mozart has remained in England after visiting as a child prodigy in 1764, "cursing the luck that made him a despised hack in a foreign country, instead of being cherished and honoured in his native Austria." Now in his 70s, but "still remarkably spry for his age," he appears to finally be catching a piece of luck: he's engaged as young Princess (future Queen) Victoria's piano teacher. Hunting caricatures in colour --- Complete example of these uncommon and lovely hand-coloured engraved plates depicting two gentlemen's hunting misfortunes. These eight scenes, published without captions, were described in the Schwerdt collection as follows: 1: Grouse shooter and wounded dog: horseman bogged in distance. 2: Sportsman with gun following bird: dog worrying sheep. 3: Sportsman firing at hare; second sportsman wounded. 4: Sportsman watching dog pursuing hare; birds disappearing. 5: Sportsman raising right arm; dogs approaching wounded bird. 6: Sportsman whipping dog; second dog with bird in mouth; gun on ground. 7: Sportsman climbing hedge, second sportsman following with dog and pointing gun dangerously; birds disappearing. 8: Sportsman fallen, with broken gun; pheasant escaping. All these amusing plates, with their soft hand-colour well preserved, indicate the publisher's name and date "Aug. 1, 1813" at the bottom of each image. Provenance: Comte G. de la Ferté -Senectere (booklabel to upper pastedown). Physical description:Small oblong folio (26 x 37.5 cm), engraved title, 8 hand-coloured engraved plates by Woodman and Turner after Frankland. Later half red calf over red cloth by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spine with two raised bands, lettered gilt. Condition:A few very minor stains to boards; all leaves anciently and neatly window-mounted with paste paper, all framed with a double ink fillet, light foxing to endpapers, minor creases, a couple closed marginal tears, but overall in very good condition. A choice copy, with the plates in brilliant and unspotted state. All the plates bear the publisher's name, and date Aug. 1, 1813. The plates apparently were issued without titles, like ours the Schwerdt copy did not have the titles, the plates show see shooting mishaps. Bound in black half morocco, gilt title on front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Raised gilt spine ( expertly rebacked ). Marbled end papers. Inscribed on the title page by the artist Andrew MacCallum to Robert Hoe Esq. . With the ex-libris of Robert Hoe tipped in on the first paste down. Binding with some small traces of use but on the whole a very fine copy with a stainless interior. The English landscape painter Andrew MacCallum ( 1821 - 1902 ) conceived this publication in memory of his deceased wife Susan Irlam whom had died in Antibes ( Southern France ) on the 24th of December 1875. The first photograph in the album is a portrait of his wife. The album consists of 28 large original photographs of his paintings, mounted on thick album leaves, with a printed caption underneath. The landscapes were made in Venice, Berchtensgraden, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa , Rome, Fontainbleau. Provenance. From the library of Robert Hoe (1839 - 1909), with a manuscript ex-dono from the artist and Hoe's ex-lbris. The library of Robert Hoe, first president of the Grolier Club, was auctioned in 1911-1912. Nearly half of the books were bought by Henry Huntingdon. Obviously a very rare publication. OCLC lists only one copy ( Mills College - Olin Library in Oakland CA. ).
