Browning to the top edge of all volumes, adjacent to the spine. very slight crease down the spine of volume 1. Otherwise the set is in excellent condition with no inscriptions. A succession of new editions, re-issues and selections, published in the Victorian era, made the Diary one of the best-known books, and Pepys one of the best-known figures, of English history. But in none of these versions - not even in the Wheatley, which for long stood as the standard edition - was there a reliable, still less a full text, and in none of them was there a commentary with any claim to completeness. This edition was in preparation for many years, and remains the first in which the entire Diary is printed and in which an attempt has been made at systematic comment on it. Octavos. Approximately 5,000 pages. Illustrated. Four volumes with a neat armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Several volumes with a bit of paper residue at the edges of the binding, and several with the topstains discolored (affecting the interior margins only the tiniest bit), occasional foxing, and three hinges neatly strengthened, very good in near very good dust jackets with modest to moderate general wear, small chips and tears (several with interior tape repairs), several instances of staining at the edges, and two longer tears: one 2" tear with an amateur internal reinforcement and one 4" tear with an internal archival reinforcement. An imperfect but sound and certainly still usable set; the text has been nicely preserved.…
