N., pushing farther north than any previous attempt while testing the methods that would define his final polar campaign. Written by Peary and extensively illustrated from his own photographs, the volume records the challenges of Arctic travel, including ship operations, winter survival, sledging techniques, and the use of Inuit knowledge and specialized expedition methods that became central to Peary's polar system. Illustrated throughout with 95 photographs by Peary, a color frontispiece by Albert Operti, and two large folding maps at the rear. CONDITION: Very Good. The binding is tight and square with moderate shelf handling wear and light rubbing to the extremities. The raised decorative stamping remains distinct. The text block is clean with light, even age-toning. Both folding maps are present and intact. Top edge gilt is slightly dulled. A contemporary gift inscription dated 1907 appears on the front free endpaper. The accompanying lecture announcement is Very Good with a faint central vertical fold, now largely flattened from storage, and minor age toning consistent with fragile newsprint. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - THE FINAL STEPS TOWARD THE POLE. Robert E. Peary's 1905-1906 Roosevelt expedition represented one of the final major American efforts before his later claim of reaching the North Pole in 1909.
