Four plays adapted for theatrical representation, each with special title page, engraved general title page representing a scene from the play, and frontispiece showing an actor in a leading part. Hardcover. Full leather binding with gold lettering on spine and a decorative gold border stamped on covers. Title pages dated 1791. Each section has own pagination. Binding is strong but leather is dry and scuffed, with thin cracks showing at hinges and corners worn and rounded. Much of the gold stamping on the spine is worn -- the red label is mostly gone, and there is a chip out of the black label bearing the names of the plays. Boards firmly attached. Pages clean and unmarked. Overall, a good copy of this collection of English drama published by John Bell.

The third edition of Volume I and II, and the first edition of Volume III, of the poetical works of John Dryden from Robert Bell's major work The Annotated Edition of the English Poets (24 vols, first published 18547). In these annotated editions, Bell includes memoirs of the poets, and various notes and introductions to particularly famous poems.Volume I contains a memoir of Dryden by Bell and seventeen poems. Volume II contains twenty-two more poems, a preface to Dryden's fables, and the first couple of parts to his 'Tales from Chaucer'. Volume III contains the rest of his 'Tales from Chaucer', his translations from Boccace, his epitaphs and inscriptions, and his lyric poems.Four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volumes I and III.This work is scarce in a three-volume set. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally generally smart, though faded to the spines. Small losses and shelf wear to the spine labels, not obscuring the lettering. Marks to the boards of Volumes II and III. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spot. Many pages are uncut. Very Good. book.

On one side of an irregular piece of paper, roughly 18 x 9 cm, torn from the foot of a document. Heavily discoloured, but neatly laid down on a 19 x 13.5 cm piece of grey paper, with the typed caption: 'Signture [sic] of: / Sir Robert HOWARD (1626-1698) P.C. / Auditor of the Excheq: and Dramatist / (part-author, with Dryden, of 'The Indian Queen' etc.)'. At the head: 'pray pay this Order out of Customes'; and beneath this the Latin draft, with date and sum (but not the name of the payee). Howard's signature, written large and bold, is at bottom left: 'Exam[inatus] P[er]. Howard'. See Image.

Period binding of full calf with raised bands, gilt decoration to spines, leather spine labels, marbled endpapers.On the verso of the front free endpaper of the first volume is a contemporary (1854) gift inscription to a member of the Sotheby family. Light rubbing to covers. A very good set in attractive bindings.

A handsome set uniformly bound in polished half calf and marbled paper overs boards, gilt spines with two (maroon and black) leather titling labels, marbled endpapers, gilt tops. Owner's name in ink on front fly leaf of each volume. Some darkening and light wear to the edges of the boards, remnants of paper bookplate removed from front pastedowns, light foxing and dust soiling, very good overall. An attractive, finely bound set.

Scarce first edition, presentation copy from the editor, of this textbook of canonical poets for students - including Milton, Dryden, Burns, Pope, Smith, Carter, and Barbauld. Woolston created this collection of the "most admired poetry" from "the best authors." The biographical summaries at the rear include this description for Charlotte Smith: "Every reader of sensibility must lament, with me, the sorrows and afflictions, which this very amiable Lady has been frequently and long exposed to, though they gave birth to some of the most exquisite Sonnets, perhaps, ever written." Issued by Mary Luckman, who took over her husband's printing business upon his death in 1784. Quite scarce, with only three copies recorded in ESTC (Bodleian, BL, Canterbury), and another three via OCLC (Yale, Penn State, University of South Carolina). A pocket window into the big names in poetry at the end of the 18th century. 36mo, 5'' x 2.75''. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked, maroon spine label, gilt rules to boards.
