Zustand: Fair. 500 x 660 mm., dissected and laid on contemporary linen, laid down on board, early outline colour, some loss of cloth at folds, the folded cloth over the edges masks the scales which appear below the margins, light surface wear. This map of the American continent was first published by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier (1723-86) in the 'Atlas Universel', 1757. The original map had the cartouche re-engraved and included a new title in 1771. This 1778 edition no doubt was published to mark the entry of the French into the American Revolution in support of independence. However, they are not identified as such on the map or in the table panel to the right.A notable feature of the map is the northwest coast of North America which includes the mythical Great River of the West and Lahontan's Longue River. These reflect a desire to find an easy water passage from the east to the west coast. Note how the upper Mississippi River branches run close to them. Admiral De Font and Martin D'Aguilar's discoveries are recorded. The map pre-dates the discoveries about to be made by James Cook which would improve the depictions of the coastline. Two large insets of the significant French colonies of Martinique and Hispaniola are included. The career of the de Vaugondy family is superbly laid out by Mary Sponberg Pedley in her book 'Bel et Utile'. Little is known of Gilles education, but he signed his marriage document in 1719 as a 'geographe'. In 1723 he witnessed a document as a 'professeur en mathematiques'. In 1731 he was fortunate to receive one-third of the business of the Sanson family. Nicolas Sanson and his descendants ran the most dominant map publishing business in Paris from the middle of the seventeenth century. Both of Nicolas' sons, Guillaume and Adrien, died childless and the business passed to a nephew, Pierre Moullart (d.1730) who later added Sanson to his name. He too died childless but wishing the family business to continue he left it to three individuals, Jacques Simon Perrier, a priest, Jean Fremont, a lawyer and Gilles Robert de Vaugondy. It is not known how well exactly they knew each other. It was enough to launch his career. By 1734 he was made 'Geographe du Roi'. Provenance: private collection of Juan and Peggy Rada. The first edition of Didier Robert de Vaugondy's 'Nouvel Atlas Portatif', which was "his only independent atlas venture, published without apparent financial support" (Pedley). Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-86) was the son of Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766). The career of the de Vaugondy family is superbly laid out by Mary Sponberg Pedley in her book 'Bel et Utile'. Jacques Simon Perrier, a priest, Jean Fremont, a lawyer, and a professor of Mathematics, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy. Perrier sold his shares soon after two his two partners. The remaining partnership continued until Fremont's death in 1751. It is not known how well they knew each other. It was enough to launch his career. By 1734 he was made 'Geographe du Roi'. The atlas was published in the same year as the slightly larger format and rarer 'Atlas Moderne' by Jean Lattre and Thomas Herissant. As Pedley described, it was an opportune time as the Jesuits were expelled from France the same year, 1762. They had been largely responsible for providing geographical education. The world map is repeated three times, each bears population thematically coloured according to religion, skin colour, and facial type. A similar situation involves the map of the Holy Land where one extra map is included. The map of 'Canada, Louisiane â¦' includes an inset displaying a large Sea of the West. An early edition of Didier Robert de Vaugondy's 'Nouvel Atlas Portatif', which was "his only independent atlas venture, published without apparent financial support" (Pedley). This issue by Delamarche dated 1790 is issued at the very beginning of the French Revolution. The previous year the Estates General met the previous year for the first time in 275 years and the Bastille was stormed. Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-86) was the son of Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766). The career of the de Vaugondy family is superbly laid out by Mary Sponberg Pedley in her book 'Bel et Utile'. As Pedley described, it was an opportune time as the Jesuits were expelled from France the same year, 1762. They had been largely responsible for providing geographical education. Didier's wife became mentally unwell, and he was forced to sell the business in 1778 to Jean Baptiste Fortin (1740-1817), a globe maker, to be able to move to the country. He issued a second edition in 1778. In 1786 he too sold the business to Charles Francois Delamarche (1740-1817), a Parisian lawyer, geographer, publisher, and globe maker. The imprints and original dates are removed from the maps. The initial world map is now a double hemisphere one dated 1786 which displays the recently mapped east coast of Australia by Cook, but without referring to Britains claim to it. The track of Cook's third voyage is also displayed, intriguingly terminating at Hawaii where reference is made to his death. An overlarge northwest coast of America is shown. The world map on Mercator's projection is repeated three times, each bears population thematically coloured according to religion, skin colour, and facial type. It is also updated to reflect recent discoveries in the Pacific Ocean, northwest America, and Australia. The United States are identified. The map of the Holy Land is also repeated.Following the regular map of France is an inserted uncalled for large folding map of 'Le Royaume de France' by Delamarche dated 1790. Departments and now added to the regional French maps. That of Africa now bears a note in the Atlantic referring to D'Anville and the source of the Nile which is also placed on the map. That of South Africa also now bears new legends in central Africa including the new 'Fort Hollandois' at the Cape of Good Hope. A new legend relating to Cook appears in the northwe.

As is often the case with these later editions, a number of the maps have had their original engraved date crudely erased. This has been somewhat arbitrarily done as the date remains on other maps. For example China is dated 1769, also the map of St Domingue shows the division of Haiti into five districts, dating it to the period of the revolutionary revolt on the island (1791-1804). A VERY FINE LARGE-PAPER COPY of Vaugondy's principal atlas, first published in 1752, and issued by subscription in a total edition of 1,118 copies. The first twelve maps in this atlas are of the ancient world; of those of the new world, the last seven relate to the Americas: "Amerique Septentrionale", "Canada" (based on records held by the Depot de la Marine), "Colonies Angloises en Amerique", "Virginie, Mariland, & Pensilvanie" (based on the map by Fry and Jefferson), "Amerique Meridionale", "Les Grandes & petites Antilles", "Iles Saint-Domingue & la Martinique." In addition to the 103 geographical maps listed there are five maps of post roads of: the British Isles, France, Germany, Spain and Portugal and Italy. The Robert de Vaugondy family of mapmakers were preeminent in the eighteenth century, at a time when the French were at the forefront of cartography. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy was a descendent of the family of the great seventeenth-century French cartographer Nicolas Sanson. Sanson had initiated the so-called "French school of cartography," which was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail, and which discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as being irrelevant. From Sanson's time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century, with the activity of the Robert de Vaugondy family, French geographical conceptions were more influential than those of any other nation. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy inherited the firm of his uncle, Pierre Moullart-Sanson, in 1730. He enlarged the stock of his family company when he purchased the estate of another acclaimed cartographer, Hubert Jaillot. He and other family members combined much of the inherited cartographic material with their own innovations, as well as those of the most advanced American mapmakers, to publish a series of beautifully produced atlases at mid-century. Gilles and his son, Didier, were the most celebrated members of the cartography dynasty, both honored with the title of Geographer to the King, Gilles in 1730 and Didier in 1760.
