Paperback. Zustand: Gut. XV, 351 p.: Ill. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - minimal b…estoßen, leichte Randläsuren am Buchrücken, leicht berieben, sonst guter Zustand / minimally scuffed, slight edge wear on spine, slightly rubbed, otherwise good condition. - Few events in human history have affected not only the course of the nation that initiated them but also the lives of virtually every people of the globe. The French Revolution was one of those events. Here, for the first time, North American and European scholars attempt to understand how the dominant means of communicationthe printed wordcontributed to this first great revolution of modern times. What was the role of printing in the French Revolution? Historians generally treat the printed word as a record of what happened instead of as an ingredient in the happening. But the printing press helped shape the events it recorded. It was an active force in history, especially during the decade 1789-1799, when the sturggle for power was a struggle for mastery of public opinion. To seize power the revolutionaries seized the word and spread itby journals, almanacs, pamphlets, posters, pictures, song sheets, stationery, board games, ration cards, money, anything that carried an impression-embedding their message in the minds of 26 million French people, many of them bent under poverty and oppression, many sunk deep in ignorance, many incapable of reading the declarations of their rights. France under the Old Regime was a crazy quilt of overlapping unitsprovinces, intendancies, municipalities, judicial territories, bishoprics, taxation zones, and customs areasmany with their own laws, weights, measurements, and dialects. How could the authorities in Paris weld them into a single nation? The printing press served as the main instrument in the creation of a new political culture. But how did it function under the conditions of revolutionary government? And how far did its products penetrate into the everyday lives of ordinary people? These are some of the questions addressed in Revolution in Print. They are raised not out of antiquarian curiosity or from a pious respect for the principles of 1789 but because culture and communication are an area of critical interest today. The French Revolution provides a unique opportunity to explore this subject when it first emerged as a vital ingredient of public life. / CONTENTS Foreword Acknowledgments xi Introduction ROBERT DARNTON PART ONE PREREVOLUTIONARY CONDITIONS Censorship and the Publishing Industry DANIEL ROCHE Philosophy Under the Cloak ROBERT DARNTON Malesherbes and the Call for a Free Press RAYMOND BIRN PART TWO REVOLUTION IN THE PRINTING TRADES Economic Upheavals in Publishing CARLA HESSE Printers and Municipal Politics PIERRE CASSELLE Agitation in the Work Force PHILIPPE MINARD A Provincial Perspective MICHEL VERNUS PART THREE THE PRODUCTS OF THE PRESS Journals: The New Face of News JEREMY D.
