(B&W photographs) Posthumously-published autobiography of the African-American actress-singer, who died in 1965 at the age of 42 from an accidental overdose of an antidepressant, following a career downturn that was further complicated by financial troubles and a nervous breakdown. According to Conrad's introduction, Dandridge "wanted to tell of her friendships and romances that crossed the color line [but] her friends attacked her in full force, telling her that her autobiography was a disgrace and should be kept quiet." Following her death, he prepared the book for publication, working from tape recordings she had made.
