Nach Kindheit und Stu…dium in London und einer Erkrankung an rheumatischem Fieber, reiste er nach Kangra, Himalaya, und ließ sich als Tee-Farmer nieder. Nach einer Reise in das Gebiet des Karakoram begann er im Mai 1868 eine Reise in das östliche Turkestan. In Kashgar kam es zu einem Treffen mit Yakub Beg, später Yakub Padishah, dem Führer eines, nach der Dungan Revolte unabhängigen Yettishar. [Wikipedia].
