These are on 7 pages, there are also occasional marginal linings in pencil.The Suez crisis occured in the 2nd year of his premiership.His controversial handling of the Suez crisis in 1956 ultimately proved to be his downfall. After the nationalisation of the Suez canal by the Egyptian nationalist Colonel Abdul Nasser, Sir Anthony Eden, fearing a new Arab alliance would cut off oil supplies to Europe, conspired with France and Israel in order to retake the canal. Following a badly performed invasion, widespread international condemnation from the United Nations, the Soviet Union, the Commonwealth and the threat of sanctions from the United States. Slight shelf wear otherwise very good in a very slightly worn and marked, price-clipped dust jacket.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy to Anthony Eden, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Anthony Eden, in friendship, R. Bruce Lockhart, London, 26th October 1957". The gift came nine months after Eden's resignation as Prime Minister. Lockhart and Eden had worked together in the Foreign Office during the Second World Wa…r, as Lockhart elucidates within this work. Lockhart was a British diplomat, secret service operative, and author of the successful Memoirs of a British Agent (1932). He worked primarily in Russia and was arrested after being accused of plotting to assassinate Lenin in 1918. Only an exchange deal for a Russian spy being held in Britain meant he avoided execution. Lockhart also helped Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina, Trotsky's secretary and the lover of the author Arthur Ransome, to escape Russia in 1919, enabling her and Ransome to marry in 1924. This work comprises vignettes from across Lockhart's life, focusing on memorable individuals he encountered throughout the course of his career. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine sunned, cloth a little soiled, minor rubbing to edges. A very good copy.
