Hadfield emphasizes the labourious researches conducted by Faraday concerning the preparation and properties of alloys of steel during the years 1819-24 which were generally overlooked because his work in the field was far in advance of the practical capabilities of the day. "In the light of his own fifty years of metallurgical experience, largely concerned with alloy steels during the whole of that period, the author claims that the results of the research presented in this book definitely established that Faraday was the first to engage in systematic research concerning the preparation of alloys of steel. Also, regarding the matter broadly and without consideration of immediate practical applications, Faraday may justly be called the pioneer of alloy steels. The complete examination of the surviving specimens of his alloys, which has now been made for the first time, shows that they anticipated in a remarkable manner the facts and principles on which the present enormous development of alloy steels is basedIt is questionable whether there has ever before been an opportunity of examining in the light of modern knowledge a number of century-old specimens in any way comparable in interest and importance with Faraday's "steel and alloys."
