Zekerheden als de hegemonie van de Verenigde Staten en oude vertrouwde Atlantische bondgenootschappen worden snel minder vanzelfsprekend. De Europese Unie zou in die wereld op drift een veilig bastion kunnen vormen, maar zij worstelt vooralsnog met haar identiteit, eurosceptische krachten in de lidstaten en ernstige democratische tekorten. Populisten ter linker- maar vooral ter rechterzijde maken gretig gebruik van de onzekerheid en onvrede om hun simplistische negatieve boodschappen aan de man te brengen. Meer dan riskant nationalisme en dromerijen over terugkeer naar vroeger 'toen alles beter was' hebben zij echter niet te bieden. Dit boek probeert deze en andere ontwikkelingen in hun onderlinge samenhang te begrijpen en probeert te zoeken naar constructieve perspectieven. Rob de Lange was lange tijd docent-onderzoeker aan de Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. Daarna was hij docent sociale wetenschappen en onderzoeksmethoden aan de Hogeschool Utrecht, in het bijzonder bij de Faculteiten Communicatie & Journalistiek en Educatie. Daarnaast was hij universitair docent bij de Afdeling Communicatiewetenschap en de International School for Humanities and Social Sciences aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Naast onderwijs in methoden van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek verzorgde hij daar seminars over public affairs aan bachelor- en masterstudenten. Hij is gepromoveerd op een proefschrift over public affairs.
