A la fin du "Discours préliminaire", on peut lire une description de l'atlas et son tarif, à savoir pour la version la plus complète : "les soixante cartes, y compris celles de Répétition, enluminées à la manière hollandaise & renfermées dans des Bordures gravées en Taille-Douce, reliées en veau, 33 liv. broché 31 liv. en Feuilles 30 livres". Nus n'avons pu trouver d'exemplaire complet des 60 cartes annoncées. On y trouve également précisé le nom de l'éditeur, à savoir "Desaint & Saillant". Les cartes doubles sont datées de 1764 et 1765, les deux grandes cartes dépliantes de 1774 et 1776. En bas du titre gravé on peut lire cette note : "Cet Atlas a été revu, corrigé et considérablement augmenté par MM. B.B. Ingénieurs-Géographes du Roi". Bon état (accroc avec mq. au dos en tête, dos restauré, rares petites brunissures sur qq. cartes, bel état intérieur par ailleurs). Langue: Français.

Reliure d'époque en plein veau brun raciné, dos à cinq nerfs à caissons dorés ornés de fleurons sous forme de grenades, pièce de titre en maroquin rouge, triple filet estampé à froid en encadrement des plats, double filet doré aux coupes, tranches mouchetées bleues, contreplats et gardes marbrés au motif coquille. Superbe atlas historique de la France, finement rehaussé en couleurs à la main à l'époque, bien complet de sa monumentale carte dépliante en parfait état. Coiffes, coupes et mors restaurés, légères griffures et épidermures sur les plats. Bel état intérieur. Une version pré-originale de cet Atlas fut publiée en 1764, avec un frontispice et 58 cartes, un an avant notre édition. La nôtre, reconnue comme étant l'originale, fut enrichie d'une carte supplémentaire et d'un discours préliminaire. Elle annonce également par erreur 60 cartes alors qu'elle en comprend en réalité 59. Notre exemplaire est probablement issu du premier tirage car il partage avec la pré-originale une formule analogue sur la page de titre : « l'intelligence de l'histoire », qui sera remplacée dans les tirages suivants par « la lecture de l'histoire ». * « Il ["Atlas historique"] a certes été conçu à l'origine pour l'"Histoire de France" de M. All edges gilt. , Giovanni Antonio Bartolomeo Rizzi Zannoni (1736 - 1814) was an Italian cartographer and geographer. Rizzi-Zannoni studied at the University of Padua (1749-1751) and then traveled… to Turkey and Russia. In 1753, he began his career as a geographer in Poland, serving King Augustus III. In 1756, he settled in Sweden and Denmark, where he was responsible for geodetic surveys in the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst (now in Germany). The following year, he entered the service of Prussia and participated in the Seven Years' War. He was then taken prisoner on December 7, 1757 at the Battle of Rossbach and sent to Paris. He would remain there for more than twenty years. He then drew up a map of the Kingdom of Naples and was appointed First Hydrographer of the Depot of Maps and Plans of the Navy (1772-1775). Returning to Padua in 1776, he embarked on a geodetic and astronomical mapping of Italy which remained unfinished, then on his best-known work, the Geographical Atlas of the Kingdom of Naples which he completed in 1812., Size : 16mo. (130 x 190 mm), Very good example of this beautiful little book of maps. Complete with 32 maps, as matches table at back, plus frontispiece and title, all handcoloured. Extremities lightly rubbed, corners bumped, interior clean and crisp.

Fine contemporary cherry red morocco, each cover finely decorated with a border of triple gilt filets, with a fine gilt lily tool at each inner corner, the smooth spine ruled in six compartment, the second with a black morocco lettering-piece, the others decorated with fine gilt lily tools, all edges gilt. A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE COPY of this beautiful pocket atlas including double-page maps of both hemispheres; maps of the continents, including one each of North and South America; and several detailed maps of east and west Europe, including a six-sheet map of the German Empire. Essentially depicting Europe towards the end of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). With its origins in the French-Indian wars in North America two years earlier, the conflict began in Europe with the French siege of British Minorca and Prussia's invasion of Saxony, and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. However the effect of the war was global: it ended France's position as the major colonial power in America, and consequently strengthened Britain's power there and in India. Rizzi-Zannoni was born 1736 in Naples and was renowned from an early age as one of the finest cartographers in Europe. In addition to cartography he worked as an astronomer, surveyor and mathematician. He was the first cartographer to triangulate Poland and helped also in the French and English border survey of America in 1757. While in the service of the Prussian's he was captured by the French at the Battle of Rosbach in early December 1757 and sent to France, where he lived for the next twenty years. In 1781 the Bourbon rulers of Naples made him director of the Topographical Office, one of the first governmental cartographic offices in Europe, where he oversaw the creation of the celebrated and monumental "Geographic Atlas of the Kingdom of Naples", published shortly before his death in 1812. This map of France offers ample detail about the French kingdom during the reign of Charles VII. It extends from the Atlantic Ocean and the southern border of England to the western border of Germany, and the Mediterranean… sea. Published in 1764, the map is labeled with rivers, cities, and lakes, and forests are depicted pictorially. An appropriately uncolored title cartouche in the lower left is decorated with flowers. It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Giovanni Antonio Bartolomeo Rizzi Zannoni (1736--1814), an Italian cartographer active in Venice and Naples, was one of the leading cartographers of the 18th century. He is admired for his careful and precise work, which responded to the growing demand in this period for accuracy and detail.
