Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. First Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, a little wear at the spine ends, fading to spine and (more severely) to an approximately 1-in-wide strip at the left ed…ge of the rear cover;one-time owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap)]. "The Ministry of Fine Arts had come into being during the short era of optimism following World War Two. Since its inception it had suffered from what might be called infant mortality. The first Minister died after six months in office, the second just before the General Election. Death claimed its third victim when Edwin Pompfret, deputy Permanent Secretary, was crushed to death by the fall of a larger-than-life bust that stood at the head of a flight of stairs. . Here indeed is the crime of murder carried out with an artistic touch, which evokes the reluctant admiration of Inspector Rivers of Scotland Yard." This was the ninth book (of 15) in the Inspector Rivers mystery series, that ran from 1945 to the end of the author's life in the late 1950s; during that period, it ran concurrently with the same author's Inspector MacDonald books (written under her more prolific pseudonym, E.C.R. Lorac), which had begun with her first novel in 1932. Critic Mary Ann Grochowski, writing in Reilly's "Twentieth Century Crime and Mystery Writers," commented that Inspector Rivers "is remarkably like Inspector MacDonald, although more meditative and less inclined to romping through the bush." Carnac/Lorac's work didn't receive much posthumous attention until the 2020s, when a number of her books have been reissued in the British Library Crime Classics series (four Carnac titles to date -- including this one -- and more than a dozen by Lorac); despite being out of print for 60 years, however, she clearly retained a following, as evidenced by the scarcity of most of her first editions (both the U.K. and U.S. issues) in today's marketplace. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good+ dj. 1st Edition (see notes). [an ex-library book, apparently, although with only minimal traces of same (a short call number written along the edge of the front endpaper, and some mild scarring to the rear endpaper from label removal); a former owner, however, has covered the rear paste…down with inked notes about the book and author, as well as his initials plus information about his original acquisition of the book; the jacket is lightly soiled, with some minor wear at the extremities, some random pieces of tape affixed to the front flap, a tiny chip at the base of the spine, and is internally tape-reinforced along the spine, apparently to prevent a long vertical crease in the spine from splitting]. The final book by this author under her Carnac pseudonym (she also wrote extensively as E.C.R. Lorac), published the year following her death, and introducing (as did "The Burning Question" two years earlier) a new detective character, Inspector Strang. The plot: "The flirtation between the rich and handsome Brigadier Fotheringay and Mrs Delancie (known to the younger guests as 'the widow de luxe') was appreciated by everyone at the comfortable and expensive Spa Hotel, Bourne Regis as a diversion and a splendid display of practiced, if dated, gallantry. The discovery of the Brigadier's body at the foot of the cliffs, the complete disappearance of the widow, and the savage attack on the night porter at the hotel plunged the residents of the Spa into a melodrama which became more ugly and more puzzling as Inspector Strang uncovered layer after layer of evidence each more baffling than the last." Carnac/Lorac's work didn't receive much posthumous attention until the 2020s, when a number of her books have been reissued in the British Library Crime Classics series (four Carnac titles to date -- not including this one -- and more than a dozen by Lorac); despite being out of print for 60 years, however, she clearly retained a following, as evidenced by the extreme scarcity of most of her first editions (both the U.K. and U.S. issues) in today's marketplace. NOTE regarding the dust jacket, which is unclipped but also unpriced, although the book otherwise appears to fit all first edition points. Illustrated by (dj) William Randell (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Fair dj. First Edition. [a decent copy, with some discoloration (browning) along the spine and at the top and right edges of the front cover, an original owner's name and address inked on the front endpaper, and a subsequent owner's initials plus extensive notes regarding date & place of purchase o…n the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap); the jacket itself, PLEASE NOTE, is a mismatch to the book, being from the 1947 American (Doubleday/Crime Club) edition (and shows numerous signs of being a repurposed library-book jacket, including glue stains on both flaps and a small hole torn in the spine (probably from the removal of a call-number label), PLUS the jacket has been trimmed at the top and bottom edges to fit the book, AND is internally tape-reinforced along all edges and seams; get the picture yet?] Chief Inspector Julian Rivers of Scotland Yard looks into a mystery involving two striped suitcases, an attractive secretary, a valuable strand of pearls, and the brutal murder of an eminent scientist (the employer of the aforementioned secretary). Like all Carnac mysteries, quite scarce in an original hardcover printing (even though this one has been shotgun-married to a degraded American dust jacket). The work of this author (who also wrote as E.C.R. Lorac) didn't receive much posthumous attention until the 2020s, when the British Library began including some of her books in their Crime Classics reprint series. (Not this one, however.) Despite having been out of print for 60 years, however, she clearly retained a following, as evidenced by the scarcity of most contemporaneous printings of her books.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Fair dj. 1st Edition (unstated). [a moderately shelfworn book, with a few tiny dents at the top and bottom edges of the covers, a little fading to the spine cloth, and the front endpaper torn out; the jacket is pretty rough, with substantial chipping and creasing at the bottom of the front panel, with s…ome internal tape-repairs to the area, and some wear at the spine ends]. After a half-dozen earlier mysteries featuring "Inspector Ryvet," all published between 1936 and 1940, the author took a five-year break (under this pseudonym, anyway) before returning with this "first of a new series of Carnac thrillers," introducing Chief Inspector Julian Rivers of Scotland Yard, who would feature in nearly every Carnac book from then until her death in 1958. The plot here: "The ancient village of Woldstane shelters some odd individuals before a wealthy and eccentric American sends his secretary to negotiate a lease of the Manor house. Once the new tenants are ensconced the story gathers momentum, and the whole village is involved in a mystery of impressive proportions. The Manor goes up in flames, and then Scotland Yard arrives in the person of Chief Inspector Julian Rivers, ex-Lieutenant Commander, R.N. [who] manages to elucidate an amazing tangle of clues, complicated by the identifying of identical twins, and finally sees his way through to the solution." The work of this author (who also wrote as E.C.R. Lorac) didn't receive much posthumous attention until the 2020s, when the British Library began including some of her books in their Crime Classics reprint series. (Not this one, however.) Despite having been out of print for 60 years, however, she clearly retained a following, as evidenced by the extreme scarcity of most contemporaneous printings of her books. NOTE that this book bears no date or edition statement, but the initial publication was in 1945 and there is a "Book Production War Economy Standard" logo and statement on the copyright page; the official publication date was October 28, and a contemporary newspaper advertisement states the price as 8/6, which matches the printed price on this unclipped jacket. In any event, a highly uncommon book, with an even more elusive dust jacket (although we certainly do wish this one was in better nick).
