A nice copy. The life of the British civil servant and financier Sir Charles Rivers Wilson [ 1831 - 1916 ]. During his career as a civil servant he was deeply involved in Egyptian affairs, being a director of the Suez Canal Company, then Financial Minister in Egypt at the time of the Urabi Revolt and subsequent British occupation of Egypt in 1882. The fall of the Khedive Ismail saw Wilson in full control, of the Egyptian Treasury. After his career in Egypt he became, in 1895, president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada before founding the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1903. 'His name with be indelibly connected with modern Egyptian history. It was largely through his efforts that Egypt gained a constitution, and he played a historic part in the closing scenes of its last depotic ruler, Ismail Pasha' [preface] 500 grams.

Zustand: Fair. - Octavo. The remnants of a gilt-lettered leather spine are present, but the covers are lacking. 53 pages with engraved head- & tail-pieces. The front & rear endpapers are soiled & there is an owner's ink name on the front endpaper. There is occasional soiling to the text & the front edges of a few overlapping pages are darkened. Good reading copy. Two nineteenth-century satiric pieces. The author of the mock-heroic "Dorriad" was anonymous. "The Great Slocum Dinner", according to the introduction, was by the authors listed above. These pieces relate to the "Dorr Rebellion", a brief armed uprising [1841-1842] in Rhode Island led by Thomas Wilson Dorr. The insurrection was precipitated by the increasing disenfranchisement of the citizens of Rhode Island, many of them recent Irish Catholic immigrants, who were unable to vote because of a requirement that voters own at least $134 of landed property.

A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Rivers Wilson, CB, with the caption "Egyptian Finance". With one page biography.

A rather brilliant copy in original cloth (few minor marks & small nick on rear cover, browning to title & frontis. from tissue guard). First Edition. A large portion of the work (pp. 70-222) relates Wilson's experiences in Egypt, 1876-80, where he served as a government director of the Suez Canal Company, vice-president of the Commission to enquire into the Egyptian financial situation, Finance Minister, and president of the Commission for the Liquidation of the Egyptian Debt. In 1895 he became president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, retiring in 1909 (pp. 267-82). He was involved in the negotiations that led to the formation of the Grand Trunk Pacific Company in 1903, and the construction of the western part of the transcontinental line from Winnipeg to Prince Rupert. The town of Rivers, Manitoba, is named after him.
