Two early nineteenth century first edition collections of metrical romances, selected, arranged and edited by Joseph Ritson and Henry Webber. Present here are two three volume first edition sets, uniformly bound in half morocco with marbled paper covered boards. The first of the two sets here is the scarce 1802 three volume first edition of English antiquary Joseph Ritson's 'Ancient Engleish Metrical Romanceës', a collection of Middle English verse romances.Although selling poorly upon publication, the work is viewed as a 'remarkably accurate production for its day' by H. A. Burd. The second set is the three volume 1810 first edition of Henry Weber's 'Metrical Romances of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Centuries', containing countless poems of love and chivalric romance. With an introduction, notes, and a glossary.Weber's volumes retain the original half titles. With the bookplate of the Exeter City Library to each front free endpaper, and with further library markings to title page versos. Library stamps to final leaves of Weber volumes. With the armorial bookplate of Joseph Neeld, and bookplate of J. O. Edwards, to each front pastedown. Neeld was an MP from 1830 to 1856.Together, these sets present a remarkable wealth of chivalric romances from ancient and middle England. In half morocco bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to back strip heads and tails, with evidence of library label removal towards back strip tails. Library numbers in gilt to back strip tails. Rubbing most significant to head of Ritson volumes. Front hinge of Ritson vol. II and Weber vol. II strained but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns and front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with light spotting and handling marks. Library markings and stamps to title page versos of each volume, and final leaves of Weber volumes. Very Good. book.
