XXXIX,243 pp. Van Riebeeck Society, 2nd series, 20. - The Guardian sailed from Spithead in September 1789 with stores for Britain's new colony in New South Wales. Thirteen days out from the Cape of Good Hope she struck an iceberg that tore away her rudder and most of her keel. Half the ship's company took to the boats, only one of which survived the stormy 1300-mile voyage back to the Cape. A month later, through exemplary courage and seamanship and against all probabilities, the crippled Guardian herself sailed into Table Bay. The full and fascinating story of the Guardian's voyage is told here in the ship's logs and letters.

Mylar wrap (removed for photos). Spine cloth chipped. Corners a bit bumped. Front hinge cracked internally. Bookplate for Theodore & Caroline Foster Sizer on front pastedown. Discolouration to text block edges. Some light soiling to first pages. Early English translations of "Voyage au Centre de la Terre" generally added "A" in front of the title. Oddly, Verne's Professor "Lidenbrock" becomes "Von Hardwigg" and there are other changes from the original French. Despite oddities in the translation, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" remains one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Riou's illustrations enter into the spirit of the text, including creepy dark caverns, a mushroom forest, prehistoric animals, a sea monster, a plain of bones, "human" remains, and so on. A modern adult is overwhelmed by the amount of scientific knowledge in Verne's head, as well as his fertile imagintion. Theodore Sizer (1892 1967) was an American professor of the history of art at Yale University and a director of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1916, he married Caroline Wheelwright Foster.10 p. of publisher's ads at rear with first page advertising works by Verne, including "Meridiana" and "From the Earth to the Moon." Early Scribner edition, cheaper than their first with fewer illustrations, intended to meet the low-price challenge presented by Henry L. Shepard's cheap edition.

Verne's fifth book, originally published in French in 1867 as "Les Enfants du Captain Grant." One of the few Verne works that Sampson Low never published in Britain. XII,58 pp. First Dutch edition; first published in London in 1792: A journal of a journey from the Cape of Good Hope . etc. - Captain Riou, did not join the expedition himself, but obtained a copy from Van Reenen's journal. The East India Company vessel wrecked on the coast of South Africa in 1782. This journal is an account of the second Dutch expedition to search for survivors of the Grosvenor wreck travelling through Kaffirland to about the mouth of the Umzimkulu. They found three old women, apparently British, living in a mixed community near the Mngazi River (to the south of Port St. Johns) who might have been from the Grosvenor ( Howgego p.460). - Scarce. First French edition.   8vo.   Original wrappers  with  leather backed chemise and slipcase.   78, [1]ads. pp.  Paris, Jansen, Originally printed in an English translation( 1792,  100 copies only) from van Reenen's  Dutch ms.  then re-translated  back into Dutch ( Leyden,1793) and here thirdly offered in French, but according to Mendessohn with " some matter not included in the original edition" Van Reenen lead a party of twelve in order to find the wreck and determine if there were any survivors.  They covered new ground and made contact with a tribe the "Hambonaas"  who had looked after three girls,  apparently saved from the wreck.  They wanted to stay until their crops had been harvested and were allowed so to do. their fate is unrecorded. Mendelssohn Vol. 1 652/3.

Text nur leicht gebräunt und nur vereinzelt leicht stockfleckig. Edward Riou (1762-1801) begleitete Cook als Midshipman auf der dritten Reise. Er diente zuerst auf der Discovery und ging nach Cooks Tod zusammen mit Clerke auf die Resolution. In der zeitgenössischen deutschen Literatur wird sein Südseeaufenthalt mit Cook gar nicht, in der englischen nur wenig erwähnt. Ausgenommen davon ist eine kuriose Anekdote um seinen Hund, der von Alexander Home und anderen Mitreisenden Rious geschlachtet und aufgegessen wurde. Riou wurde das Fell des Tieres über den Kopf gezogen. Im Anschluss bot man ihm Trost für den bösen Scherz, indem man ihm von der sonderbaren Speise anbot - Home hatte eine Portion für ihn aufgehoben. An die Öffentlichkeit gelangte diese Geschichte erst 1838 mit Erscheinen von George Homes' "Memoirs of an Aristocrat". Der Autor war der Sohn des oben erwähnten Alexander Home (1739-1823) und nahm in seine Erinnerungen einige der Erzählungen seines Vaters mit auf: einen bedeutenden Bericht über Cooks Tod und die erwähnte Geschichte von Rious Hund. - s. die obige Nr. Wirklichen Ruhm erlangte Riou 1789 als Befehlshaber der "Guardian", die als Teil der zweiten Flotte Nachschub und auch 25 zur Deportation bestimmte Verbrecher in die britische Häftlingskolonie an der Botany Bay transportieren sollte. Zwölf Tage nach Abreise vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung stieß das Schiff gegen einen Eisberg und wurde dabei so schwer beschädigt, dass man jeden Augenblick damit rechnen musste, dass es sinken würde. Ein Großteil der Reisenden rettete sich in die Boote, Riou selbst weigerte sich, das Schiff zu verlassen. Zusammen mit den anderen Verbleibenden gelang es ihm durchzuhalten, bis man auf ein holländisches Paketboot stieß, mit dem zusammen es gelang, die "Guardian" zum Kap zurückzubringen. Sie sank nur wenige Tage später. Eines der fünf ausgesetzten Boote stieß auf ein französisches Kaufmannsschiff, das die verzweifelten Seeleute aufnahm. Sie erreichten so das Vorgebirge der Guten Hoffnung, von wo sie auf der französischen Frigatte "Driade" nach St. Helena gebracht wurden. Von der Besatzung der anderen vier Boote hörte man nie wieder. Riou starb in der Schlacht um Kopenhagen, in der er unter Kapitän Nelson diente. "In poor dear Riou", schrieb Nelson, "the country has sustained an irreparable loss". Charnock gibt im hier besprochenen, zweiten Band von "Nelson's Leben" einen biographischen Abriss Rious.
