Une des quelques éditions anciennes de la traduction française, très rare. La traduction est l'oeuvre de Sauvin, qui ajouta un "advertissement aux chirurgiens françois". L'édition originale avait paru sous le titre "Encheiridium anatomicum et pathologicum" en 1648. Riolan a voulu faire un condensé de son "Anatomia", dans un format plus pratique, et en a profité pour y insérer "plusieurs belles pensées & diverses inventions nouvelles". Selon Portal, les préparations anatomiques y sont encore mieux décrites. On y retrouve ses belles descriptions anatomiques, notamment des structures auxquelles il laissa son nom (arcade, bouquet, muscle ciliaire). Le livre sixiesme comporte un "discours contre la nouvelle doctrine des veines lactées"" et un discours contenant le jugement general du Sieur Riolan, touchant le mouvement du sang, tant aux brutes quaux hommes, tiré de la réponse qu'il a faite à Slegel et les utilitez de la circulation" (Riolan y attaque Harvey, qui ne lui a jamais répondu). Cet ouvrage contient aussi in fine un "Traité de l'Anatomie Pneumatique". Jean Riolan fils (1577-1657), né à Paris, fut, comme son père, médecin. Il fut professeur au Collège Royal et médecin ordinaire d'Henri IV puis de Louis XIII. Il fut aussi pendant dix ans premier médecin de Marie de Médicis. Riolan fut un excellent anatomiste, le plus célèbre de son temps, et le plus grand de tous selon Thomas Bartholin. Il était partisan de la dissection et des injections d'air pour visualiser le réseau vasculaire. Il était néanmoins conservateur, portant une admiration démesurée aux Anciens, respectant en particulier les enseignements de Galien, ce qui l'amena à combattre la découverte de Harvey. Édition originale de la traduction française. Le Hollandais Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680), laissa d'importants ouvrages médicaux, suivant les thèses mécanistes de Descartes, mais c'est comme naturaliste qu'il innova le plus fondamentalement. La théorie dominante à son époque concernant les insectes était celle d'Aristote, qui considérait ces animaux comme des êtres inférieurs en affirmant qu'ils n'avaient pas d'anatomie interne, se reproduisaient par génération spontanée et parvenaient à maturité par une métamorphose soudaine et totale. Swammerdam collectionna et étudia les insectes toute sa vie, et s'attacha à réfuter les trois arguments d'Aristote. Son Historia insectorum generalis, parue en latin en 1669 et ici en traduction française, livre le résultat de ses travaux relatifs à la métamorphose. Swammerdam la rejetait a priori comme ouvrant la voie à l'athéisme, puisqu'elle autoriserait le hasard et l'accident au détriment de la loi et de la régularité. Néanmoins, il en démontra l'inanité par des moyens purement scientifiques : il pratiqua des dissections de larves et chrysalides et opéra des comparaisons entre espèces différentes (dont rend compte ici le tableau imprimé dépliant), pour défendre l'idée d'un développement des larves par épigenèse. Première édition rare de la célèbre collection d'essais de Riolan (1577 - 1657), l'adversaire le plus fervent des découvertes d'Harvey sur la circulation sanguine. in-8°.

Thick folio, older full brown calf (rather scuffed and worn but solid with joints and hinges re-enforced; inked ownership names on title of Robert Troupe Paine with his matching Harvard College donation bookplate; a few pages with old ink marginalia; some pages at front with worming in lower margin). Lutatiae Parisorum: Sumptibus Gaspari Meturas, 1650. Overall a very good copy of this uncommon book. OCLC lists only 14 copies. Extensive anatomical manual by the French physician Jean Riolan Jr. (1580-1657), with detailed commentaries on the opinions of his contemporaries, such as Bauhin, Bartholin, Spigelius and Harvey. He was "the most powerful opponent of Harvey's theories on the circulation of the blood and one of few critics Harvey took seriously, to the extent of replying in his "De Circulatione Sanguinis" and prompted him to write his second major work "De Generatione Animalium". Riolan developed his own concept of circulation, according to which the blood circulated very slowly (perhaps once or twice a day) and only through the large arteries and veins of the body, which he claimed were connected directly by anastomoses" (DSB).

Minor browning, but very good. Very Rare First Edition, with no copies except this one appearing in auction records; it was published one year before the 1649 Leiden edition that is sometimes erroneously cited as the first. Riolan's Encheiridium anatomicum is the work he is best remembered for, since its rejection of some of William Harvey's ideas on blood circulation prompted Harvey to reply with his Exercitationes duae anatomicae de circulatione sanguinis ad Joannem Riolanum (1649), the only published answer he ever issued to criticisms of De motu cordis. Contrary to Riolan's intent, his Encheiridium ended up helping to validate Harvey's theory, as Harvey used Exercitationes duae not only to demolish Riolan's Galenic notions on the circulation but also to reinforce his own ideas with more direct experimental evidence of the circulation than given in De motu cordis. Octavo later half calf and marbled sides (1" split to head&foot of hinge/tips worn) [20]+471+[48]pp (Signatures: *8 2* A-Z AaBb8 Cc6 (Cc6 blank) Dd-Hh8 (and 24 unsigned leaves of letterpress accompanying plates). Pages 411-416 omitted in numbering FEP with comments on Riolan by a previous owner. The folding plates and their facing textural explanations are printed on one side of the leaves only, the first plate has a small repaired tear without loss, last few blank versos of the pages are dusty in margins. Small loss to blank area of lower margin of frontis. Some stainging and minor tanning throughout to the pages but never intrusive and not affecting the crispness of the paper. *Riolano was physician to Mary de Medici mother of Louis XIII and influenced the king to establish Paris' botanical gardens. This, is one of his principal works but he also wrote against Harvey's blood circulation, tried to disprove existance of Giants &c but according to the commentator on the front endpaper he was finally convinced of the circulatory vascular system towards the end of his life (referenced by Waller 7998). 1 volume. A nice and clean copy with only minor, very light soiling. Nice woodcut initials. 51 ff. Very rare first edition of this work on the freedom and immortality of the soul, by the father of the famous physicist and anatomist, Jean Riolan the Younger. Jean Riolan the Elder (1539-1605) was also himself a noted French anatomist and a leading member of the medical faculty of Paris. He fought against the novelties that entered the faculty due to Paracelsus and authored a number of works attacking the most famous of the scientists who were in favour of chemical means. Works by him are of great scarcity.The work, which is divided into three parts attacks the theories on the soul of Pomponazzi, Portius, Sepulveda, and Cardano, and as such it is an important document in the seminal controversy about the immortality odf the soul which dominated most philosohical thought of the Renaissance.We have been unable to find the work in any bibliographies.
