Some discolouration to the front board and wear to the leather spine. Internally there is some foxing which has affected the plates. Suggestion of a historic damp stain to the bottom of the front endpapers. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Note, ABE will suggest that this is a signed copy. this is not the case, the book is NOT signed by the author.

'The Seasons' and 'The Castle of Indolence' are considered his two greatest works. The work is written in Spenserian stanzas, created by the poet Edmund Spenser. Though at the time it was widely viewed as an outdated form, Thomson's work would help inspire a resurgence in this metric form later during the Romantic movement. Illustrated throughout. Bound by Remnant and Edmonds, London. Binders label to the rear pastedown. Collated, complete. In a full cloth binding. Externally, sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Crack to the front and rear joints, both to the head and to the tail. Cloth lifting from the spine. Rubbing also to the extremities. Marks to the front and rear boards. The first edition with William Rimer's illustrations.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and eleven plates.Collated, complete.'The Castle of Indolence' is an allegorical poem by James Thomson, written in the style of Spenser in Spenserian stanzas. Thomson used this form of verse at a time when it was considered to be outdated. However, this use of the old-fashioned inspired the new Romantic poets greatly, including Byron, Wordsworth, and Keats. The poem is quoted in Washington Irving's tale 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, boards are damp stained. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Spots to the endpapers. internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with a tide mark to the text, heavier to the plates. Good. book.
