Original Poster. Color lithograph. 30 x 20 inches. This poster features a young 'doughboy' advancing out of his trench, clutching a billowing American flag. His pale face and the bright colors of the flag stand out prominently against the dark background. Sidney H. Riesenberg (1885-1971) was an illustrator from Chicago who lived in Yonkers, NY. He was one of be best know illustrators of the WW1 era, creating numerous posters for the war effort, including those for the Marines and the US Navy. This poster, for the Third Liberty Loan, is his most celebrated work. A small upper center fold but otherwise in very good condition.

The soldiers' mouth is agape, and he has a look of fear in his eyes. This imagery was meant to target a civilian's thoughts of their loved ones fighting in Europe. The poster encouraged the viewer to purchase a Liberty Loan to support the soldiers and end the war. Liberty Loans were bonds that the government sold so they could keep up with the expenses of war. These were sold back to the government after the war./ About the Artist: Sidney Riesenberg (1885 1971) "was an illustrator and artist who lived in Yonkers, NY and commuted to his studio in NYC by train. He is known, as a professional illustrator, for his posters for the United States Marine Corps and the Liberty bond programs, for his painted pulp covers, magazines, and for oil paintings of diverse subjects./ Poster is linen-backed, from a private collection and in very good condition.
