Zustand: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: leichte Lagerspuren/minor shelfwear. Objects Moving through Time, Space, and Meaning. Edited by Arkadiusz Blaszczyk, Robert Born and Florian Riedler. Ten contributions by Stephanie Armer, Arkadiusz Blaszczyk, Robert Born, Albrecht Fuess, Eva Hanke, Anja Kregeloh, Alexandr Osipian, Anthony T. Quickel, Florian Riedler, Stefan Rohdewald and Mehmet Tepeyurt. This volume analyzes historical processes of mobility by focusing on material objects. Mobility - as a shorthand for various related processes such as migration, transfer, entanglement, and translation - involves human actors, immaterial elements such as ideas and knowledge, but also objects in various forms and functions. For example, as material infrastructures they are the basis for transport and travel; as goods they are the object and purpose of trade or gift exchange. By focusing on the way objects determined certain processes of mobility and how their social meaning and materiality was transformed in these processes, the contributors hope to gain deeper insight into the historical relations between the Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe, and Persia. 327 Seiten, gebunden (Transottomanica; Band 4/V&R unipress 2022). Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume approaches the topic of mobility in Southeast Europe by offering the first detailed historical study of the land route connecting Istanbul with Belgrade. After this route that diagonally crosses Southeast Europe had been established in Roman times, it was as important for the Byzantines as the Ottomans to rule their Balkan territories. In the nineteenth century, the road was upgraded to a railroad and, most recently, to a motorway. The contributions in this volume focus on the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. They explore the various transformations of the route as well as its transformative role for the cities and regions along its course. This not only concerns the political function of the route to project the power of the successive empires. Also the historical actors such as merchants, travelling diplomats, Turkish guest workers or Middle Eastern refugees together with the various social, economic and cultural effects of their mobility are in the focus of attention. The overall aim is to gain a deeper understanding of Southeast Europe by foregrounding historical continuities and disruptions from a long-term perspective and by bringing into dialogue different national and regional approaches.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The city of Ni, now in Serbia, was part of the Ottoman Empire for about half a millennium. This study offers the first in-depth examination of the city's history during the last phase of Ottoman rule, from 1700 to 1878. It traces the development of a city located on one of the main routes across the Balkans, making it a frequent stop for travellers and merchants. Thanks to the fortress built in the eighteenth century, Ni became an important military stronghold near the new border with the Habsburg Monarchy. In the nineteenth century it became a showcase of urban renewal as part of the Ottoman modernisation policy.Drawing on a wide range of sources, including city maps and census records, the study aims to reconstruct the growth of Ni and its population. It places a strong emphasis on the development of urban space, which the study understands as consisting of multiple overlapping territories. Special attention is paid to the evolution of urban life, which was characterised by different religious and ethnic communities. The study traces the strategies employed by the Ottoman authorities and local elites to govern this diverse population in different phases of the city's history. Overall, Ni emerges as a typical Ottoman city whose development was embedded in wider political, economic and social trends of the Ottoman Balkans.Verlag D.Oesterreichische, Dr. Ignaz Seipel-Platz 2, 1010 Wien 280 pp. Englisch.
