Cover worn, soiled and stained. Robert Stafford Arthur Palmer was the nephew of the author, Laura Elizabeth Ridding. A black and white photography of Robert Palmer at the age of 23 appears opposite the title page. The book covers his life from his childhood (beginning in 1888) until his death in 1916, when he died after penetrating the Turkish trench line with a few men. He was mortally wounded while trying to rally his men to hold the captured sector. Includes chapters describing Robert Palmer's childhood, his years at Winchester and Oxford, his tour of duty in India (1911-1912, and again in 1914-1915), the "cultured leisure" thrust upon him during most of the time he spent in Mesopotamia, and his promotion to Captain. The letters he wrote between January 2nd and 20th, 1916, describe the march to the relief of Kut, its ill-management, and the fighting and suffering involved. It appears that he was the only Hants officer who actually penetrated the Turkish trenches with a few men. Lady Laura Elizabeth Ridding born Laura Elizabeth Palmer (26 March 1849 - 22 May 1939) was a British biographer, suffragist and philanthropist. Her father, Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne, had married Lady Laura, daughter of William Waldegrave, 8th Earl Waldegrave, in 1848. They had five children and she was their eldest. In 1876 she married George Ridding, the first bishop of Southwell, and became known as Lady Laura Ridding. In 1885 she founded the National Union of Women Workers at a conference in Nottingham that she had organized. She founded the organization with the writer Louise Creighton and the administrator Emily Janes. Although it was called a union its purpose was to co-ordinate the voluntary efforts of women across Great Britain. It said that it would "promote sympathy of thought and purpose among the women of Great Britain and Ireland" Creighton became the first President and in time Ridding would also serve. Ridding wrote five biographies, the first three volumes were for her husband. She then wrote a biography of her nephew Robert Palmer and a fifth about her sister Laura Palmer. The Hon. Robert Stafford Arthur Palmer was born 26 September 1888, the second son of the 2nd Earl of Selborne, KG, GCMG (C 1873-1878 and Warden of Winchester College 1920-1925) and grandson of the Marquess of Salisbury, three times Prime Minister. Robert came to Winchester College in September 1902 and was in C House, Du Boulays. He won the Warden and Fellow's Prizes for English Verse and Greek Prose and the Duncan Prize for English Historical Essay. The same year he was elected to a Classical Scholarship at University College, Oxford, and left Winchester in the Spring of that year. At Oxford, Robert took First Class degrees in Classical Moderations and Literae Humaniores, obtained distinction in the examination for the Ireland Scholarship and was President of the Union. He had already served for some time in the 6th Battalion Hampshire Regiment - his county Territorial battalion - and went with them to India in October 1914. The following August he left Agra with a draft to reinforce the 4th Battalion of the Hampshires and took part with them in an unsuccessful attempt to relieve the garrison at Kut-el-Amara, during which he fell at the Battle of Umm-el-Hannah on 21 January 1916. At first he was posted as missing but it later became known that he had fallen into the hands of the Turks and died soon after reaching hospital. He is commemorated at Winchester by the altar piece in Chapel. Palmer's parents paid for the "Mother" figure which was dedicated in 1923 by HRH The Prince of Wales. His parents had his war letters and poems privately published in 1916 as Letters from Mesopotamia: from Robert Palmer.…
