He was also influential as a band pedagogue, and greatly affected the field of music education in the US and abroad. In Fennell's New York Times obituary, colleague Jerry F. Junkin was quoted as saying "He was arguably the most famous band conductor since John Philip Sousa." Fennell also studied conducting with Serge Koussevitzky at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood in 1942 (with classmates Leonard Bernstein, Lukas Foss and Walter Hendl). He was appointed Koussevitzky's assistant at the Center in 1948. Conducting the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and various other groups, Fennell recorded many of the standards of the wind band repertoire. He received both a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Tuba Performance and a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Georgia State University. He performed with multiple jazz and symphonic groups in the Atlanta area and had been a freelance tubaist in the Atlanta area for over 50 years, starting in clubs as a teenager in Underground Atlanta; he toured with Clyde Beatty for the Cole Brothers Circus, Henry Mancini, and Johnny Mathis. Puckett was a beloved band director who taught his entire career in the Clayton County School System, serving at North Clayton Junior High School, Forest Park High School, and retiring from Mount Zion High School in 2003. While at North Clayton Jr. High, his band performed at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1982. the National Winner of the 1981 ASBDA Stanbury Award, election into the John Phillip Sousa Foundation Legion of Honor, and the Georgia Music Educator Associations Distinguished Career Award in 2021. This is a UNIQUE grouping of American musical book/ephermera. Fennell (1914-2004) was an American conductor of international renown. His NY Times obituary cited him as "arguably the most famous band conductor since John Philip Sousa." A notable accomplishment was to establish wind ensembles as performing group. He performed under the personal direction of Sousa at a student concert in 1931. After completing his music degrees at Rochester's Eastman School of Music, he studied in Salzburg Austria 1938 and then with Koussevitzky at Tanglewood in 1942 with classmate Leonard Bernstein, becoming Asst Director to Kousevitzky in 1948. During WW II he served with the USO, returing to Eastman in 1952. During his long and illustrious career he conducted in many important venues including the London Symphony Orchestran, the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Dallas Wind Symphony, The Boston Pops, Minneapolis Symphony, Miami Philharmonic, the Library of Congress label, and in 1997 was the first civilian chosen to conduct an entire concert of the United States Marine Band. The special honor was repeated at a performance at the Kennedy Center a year later.
