Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Jews under Moroccan Skies tells the story of Jewish life in Morocco, describing in realistic detail how Jews and Muslims interweaved their lives in peace for centuries. The authors give us the rich history of Berber Jews, the Moroccan tzadikim, and Jewish mysticism in the country. They also describe the cultural differences between the Judeo-Spanish communities of the North, the Francophone urban Jews, and the Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Berber traditions. 'No chapter in the long history of the Jewish people has more power and more relevance to our contemporary world than Moroccan Jewry. And it is the least known, by far! This wonderful book will draw you into its mystery, captivating and capturing your imagination. If you don't want to be tempted to travel, don't read this book. You will never be satisfied until you see it with you own eyes accompanied by the unparalleled teacher and guide, Raphael David Elmaleh! People all over the world have been waiting for Raphy to put his words down on paper. This magnificent book is the result. It is a gem!' -- Peter A. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. SHAW, George Bernard (illus. & stage settings Charles Ricketts). Saint Joan: A Chronicle Play in Six Scenes and an Epilogue. London: Constable and Co. Ltd., 1924. Large Folio (395 × 281 mm). Quarter cloth and illustrated boards. Paper title labels to spine and front cover. Top edge gilt; others uncut. [ii], v, [1], 182, [1] pp. 16 plates tipped-in throughout, each with a caption page preceding it: 12 in full colour; 4 in black and white (stage settings). Illustrated pictorial dust wrapper with Ricketts's design in blue. Printed on Batchelor's handmade paper by R & R Clark, Edinburgh. First illustrated edition. One of 750 unnumbered copies. First illustrated edition of any work by George Bernard Shaw. Published 2 October 1924. Saint Joan was Shaw's most sustained engagement with history and, in the view of many critics, his greatest work. The play tells the story of Joan of Arc as a practical genius of military and political organisation, born too early into a world that lacks the categories for what she is. She is a proto-Protestant in a Catholic world, a nationalist in a feudal world, and a person of individual conscience in a world governed by institutional authority. The London premiere of Saint Joan was given on 26 March 1924 at the New Theatre, with Sybil Thorndike — for whom Shaw had written the role — creating Joan in a performance that established the play's canonical status before the illustrated edition reached its readers in October. The following year, the Nobel Committee awarded Shaw the Nobel Prize for Literature, citing Saint Joan specifically in their deliberations. This edition, the first illustrated edition of any of Shaw's works, was published into that context: a volume produced with the conscious understanding that the text it contained was one of the major plays of the century. This special edition of the publication features illustrations and stage settings by Charles Ricketts. Ricketts (1866-1931) was the foremost book designer and decorative artist of the English Aesthetic movement — the co-founder, with Charles Shannon, of the Vale Press, which published between 1896 and 1904 some of the most beautiful hand-printed books in the British tradition. His stage designs were renowned for their chromatic richness and historical imagination. On display in this work are 16 chromatic plates of his designs, beautifully presented and a perfect accompaniment to the play. Very good. Dust jacket toned and chipped along edges, particularly at spine ends — as is characteristic of this edition. Some rubbing and wear along edges of cover boards. Internally bright, clean, and near fine. Plates show slight curling at lower corners, the characteristic vulnerability of this book in any copy. However, they are entirely free from creasing, which is notably uncommon. Colour remains bold and vivid throughout. Please note: This is a large volume. Additional postage costs may apply. If so, we will contact you after purchase. Charles Ricketts (illustrator).…

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. First edition. A fantastic first edition copy of George Bernard Shaw's play regarding Joan of Arc. Signed by the star of the play, Sybil Thorndike. Signed by many notable figures such as: Sybil Thorndike, the British actress who 'Saint Joan' was written especially for; Prime Minister James Ramsay Macdonald; Philip Snowdon, Chancellor of the Exchequer; Morgan Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education; Arthur Henderson, Home Secretary. These signatures are to a dedication plate tipped in to the front endpaper, 'To J D Morgan, in friendship, with the best of good wishes from. Cardiff: December 1924.' There are thirty-five names signed to the dedication plate, most likely with association to Macdonald's ministry and the Labour Party. The signature of Sybil Thorndike is below the date on the dedication plate, insinuating this was signed afterwards.A fantastic copy of this play. Limited print run of 750 copies on handmade paper. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding. With light shelfwear to the extremities and minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Very Good Indeed. C Ricketts (illustrator). book.…

First edition. Folio. pp [vi], 183. 16 tipped-in colour plates by Charles Ricketts. One of 750 copies printed on hand-made paper. Designer binding by Gisele Aron executed by Zaehnsdorf probably in the 1950's: full cream and tan calf tooled in gilt and in blind, the title in red morocco inlaid on upper cover. Top edge gilt. Silk-covered endpapers, followed by another set of endpapers with a fleur-de-lys design. Most of the plates are creased at the bottom left corner, but only a couple of them significantly so. This seems to be a common problem with this book - we've never seen a copy where the plates haven't been affected in this way. Spine a little scuffed and tanned. Slight spotting to the prelims. Very good indeed in black buckram slipcase.…
