In den WarenkorbHand coloured lithograph heightened with gum arabic, 28.6 x 42.8cm (plate size), 32.6 x 43.3cm (with trimmed margins), toning at the plate mark and to the verso of the plate, paper repair affecting the upper left corner of the plate. A good example. Plate (no. 9) from the third volume of Gould's, "The mammals of Australia". Gould notes "The animal here represented was originally described by Mr Ogilby.from a drawing by Major Sir Thomas L. MItchell of a specimen obtained by him on the banks of the River Murray in South Australia. The accompanying Plate represents the animal in three positions and of the natural size." It is sobering to note that Gould records that the range of the species was extensive and hypothesized it probable that "the greater part of the interior would be inhabited by it". Over one hundred and fifty years after he wrote these words habitat destruction has decimated the population of this native creature. …

A very good example. A charming plate (no. 2) from the third volume of Gould's, "The mammals of Australia". Gould notes "This new species is about the size of and similar to H. albipes but it differs in having larger ears, much more delicately formed feet, the tail near destitute of the long brushy hairs towards the tip, and smaller eyes. Face and sides of the neck blue-grey; upper part of the head, space between the ears, the ears and upper parts of the body pale brown, interpersed with numerous fine black hairs; under surface white; flanks mingled grey and buffy white; fore feet white, with an oblique mark of dark brown separating the white from the greyish brown of the upper surface. The figures are the size of life." Delicate notes for a now extinct Australian species.…

A very good example. Fine plate (no. 51) from the fourth volume of John Gould's "The Birds of Great Britain". In the accompanying text to the plate Gould notes ".how widely does this bird range! and how distant does it wander from its breeding-place! Young birds generally wander further from their birth-place than adults; and hence it probably is that we never see an Australian example in the red dress, which may not be acquired until the bird is on its return to the place in which it was bred.[it] has two distinct lines of migration ? a western one through Europe to Africa, and an eastern from China, through the Philippines, and across the line to Australia, ? the great peninsula of India, and probably Burmah, forming a kind of neutral ground wherein it is seldom seen ? so rarely, indeed, that Mr. Jerdon does not include it in his ?Birds of India'. The Plate represents the male in his spring dress, and the female in winter, of the size of life.".…

In den WarenkorbFine hand coloured lithograph heightened with gum arabic, 56 x 38.5cm (sheet size), small stitch holes to the inner margin. A very good example in clean, bright condition. A striking plate of this legendary creature (no. 57) from Gould's monumental "Birds of Great Britain" (1862-1873). In the text to the plate Gould records that the composition owes itself to the Duke of Argyll who saw ".a Raven sporting about in the air, with something strange in its bill, which, after a time, it fell to the ground. On examination it proved to be the expanded cone of a silver fir. However singular this freak of the bird may have been, it was attended with a circumstance of no ordinary interest; for the cone was covered with a parasitic plant (Phelonites strobilina) so very rare that few botanists possess it, and there was nota specimen in the British Museum until, the Duke having kindly presented the cone to me, I transferred it, with the rare fungus still attached, to the national collection.".…

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Original watercolour heightened with body colour, numbered in pencil to the lower right '4.51', (300 x 450 mm) A particularly beautiful large watercolour of one of the most attractive winter visitors. The Bar-tailed Godwit is a long-billed, long-legged wading bird, which visits UK shores for the winter. Most usually seen in its grey-brown winter plumage, birds in spring may show their full rich chestnut breeding plumage. In flight it shows a white patch stretching from the rump up the back, narrowing to a point. It breeds in the Arctic of Scandinavia and Siberia. A fine example of Richter's work. He was one of a small group of distinguished artists whom Gould employed to work on his various ornithological works. It is generally considered that he did his best work for The Birds of Great Britain, op. cit., for which he made a total of about 280 watercolours. He was the first artist to draw and lithograph family groups of British birds with nestlings and fledglings in their appropriate environments. In the text which accompanies the published image, Gould relates that the Bar-tailed Godwit was found during autumn 'wherever a tidal estuary or a low flat beach occurs'. In the spring large flocks from the south added to the wintering birds particularly on the eastern coasts. He adds: 'They are now in the finest dress, having exchanged the grey plumage of winter for the rich chestnut livery of the approaching nuptial season.'. The rusty-red male is depicted here in summer plumage, the larger female in winter plumage. The Limosa Lapponica was previously known as Limosa rufa. Provenance: Frederick Ducane Godman and by descent to Mr. and Mrs. V.A. G. Tregear, Christie's London, 4 October 1994, lot 138. Painted for John Gould's Birds of Great Britain, 1862-1873, volume 4 plate 51. …

In den Warenkorb[circa 1849-87]. Two hand-colored lithographs, 14 1/2 x 21 1/4", both with a second leaf of text; matted, very good and ready for framing. § Plates 236 and 260 with original corresponding text from A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds, Volume 4. Plates lithographed after John Gould, H.C. Richter and W. Hart, drawn for the most part by Hullmandel & Walton. Gould supervised the lithographers, who applied gold and silver leaf underneath the watercolor to achieve a remarkably lifelike representation of each hummingbird's iridescent feathers. The two species of hummingbirds depicted are both from Central America, Heliomaster Constanti or plain-capped starthroat and Helianthea Bonapartei, the golden-bellied starfrontlet.…
